Academic

Career Plans

Throughout a student's academic career at Florida Tech, there are several steps that can be taken to assure the best results in the career path after graduation. We have provided a brief breakdown by academic year:

Freshman

  • This is the foundation of the academic career and extracurricular activities. Involvement in professional organizations, and student activities are key in gaining knowledge on the profession and creating a professional network.
  • Start building a resume and have an advisor review it. This will identify areas of qualification, experiences, and skills that need to be acquired. Remember, a resume is a work in progress.
  • Attend Career Fair and Employer Day to become familiar with employers and positions in the industry. Prepare to make a good impression by attending fair workshops as recruiters may attend career events consecutively.
  • Start to build a rapport with your professors as many come from the industry you are pursuing and can become a great reference down the road.

Sophomore

  • Become more involved and pursue leadership positions in professional organizations and student activities.
  • Attend workshops to familiarize yourself with career and professional related topics.
  • Attend employer information sessions to identify potential opportunities and speak to recruiters for further insight to the profession and industry.
  • Begin identifying possible internship or part-time opportunities to gain experience and contacts.

Junior

  • Meet with academic and career advisors often to discuss career plans, industry, research opportunities, and possible positions.
  • Conduct research on your specific career field to better understand employment prospects, obstacles, and highly sought after skills.
  • Identify possible internship opportunities early in the semester prior to start date, or return to previous internship employer in an advanced position with greater responsibilities.

Senior

  • Narrow down employers and research career paths and job descriptions that you would be interested in pursuing.
  • Schedule mock interview with the Career Service Office
  • Attend the Career Fair and Employer Day to meet and network with employers. To assure you navigate the fair effectively, attend fair preparation workshops.
  • Participate in on-campus interviews
