We are pleased to announce the faculty selected for the 2005 Faculty Summer Institute. Faculty were nominated by the FSI alumni to offer proposals to address this year’s theme of “Diversity in the Classroom.” FSI alumni then reviewed the portfolio of proposals to select those for this year’s session.
Faculty projects for this year include:

* Cem Kaner, Computer Science, “ Turning the lecture course inside out--Improving in-classroom effectiveness by combining in-class labs with online lectures.”
* Steve Lazarus, Marine and Environmental Systems, “Development of a Web-Based Module to Illustrate a Fundamental Meteorological Relationship:
The Polar Jet and Atmospheric Temperature”
* Joel Olson, Chemistry, “Incorporation of Classroom Demonstrations into Freshman Chemistry Courses”
* Lisa Perdigao, Humanities and Communication, “Constructing Culture:
Studying the Social Constructions of Race, Class, and Gender Difference in Literature, Theory, and Practice”
* Bill Picard, Humanities and Communication, “A New Course –
‘Globalization: The World within Us’, designed by students from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds”
* Matthew Ruane, Humanities and Communication, “Using Role-playing Exercises to Promote In Depth Student Awareness of Historical Phenomena”
Each of these faculty will receive a summer stipend to pursue their project and they will share the results of their efforts in the Fall.
The session this summer promises to be an interesting and productive set of projects. We will be announcing the speaker sessions in a forthcoming email and we hope you will join us for the public seminars during May 9-13.
