Academic Programs

  • Added B.S. degrees in software development and computer information systems
  • Added master’s degree in software engineering and meteorology
  • Added Ph.D. degree in the School of Psychology
  • Added master’s and doctoral degrees in industrial/organizational psychology
  • Established program to earn M.S. degree in systems engineering for employees of Harris, Inc. and Northrop Grumman

Building the Endowment

  • Completed Campaign for a Rising Star
  • Grew endowment from $1.5 million in 1997 to $37 million to date

Improved Facilities

  • Constructed the F.W. Olin Engineering Complex, F.W. Olin Life Sciences Building and F.W. Olin Physical Sciences Center
  • Opened Columbia Village, state of-the-art residence suites
  • Renovated and refurbished the Miller Building

Recruitment and Retention of Quality Students

  • Increased undergraduate enrollment from 1,843 to 2,148
  • Improved freshman-to-sophomore retention rate to 79%
  • Increased financial aid from $7 million to more than $17 million and discount index from 17% to 33%
  • Created Microsoft Scholarship Program for undergraduates
  • Added five new intercollegiate sports: men and women’s golf and tennis as well as women’s soccer

Research Accomplishments

  • Significantly increased new awards to $8.5 million in calendar year 2003
  • Created the Florida Lambda Rail with other Florida universities—a high-speed network connecting Florida Tech to distributed worldwide information technology resources
  • Hired three research professors dedicated to growing Florida Tech’s capability to compete for state, federal and private research funds
  • Won grants and contracts totaling $9 million per year in expenditures to support faculty salaries, students, equipment and indirect costs associated with funded research
  • Spun off a for-profit faculty and university owned company, Security Innovation, to commercialize intellectual property developed by the University Center for Information Assurance
