Dr. Cosentino has a unique combination of industrial and academic experience, which lends real-world knowledge to his classroom teaching. He has been the Principal Invesitgator on well over $3 million of research on numerous projects in multidisciplinary areas.  These areas include fiber optic sensors for geotechnical and  traffic classification and vehicle weight, sustainability in highways  involving re-use of waste materials such as waste-to-energy ash, waste tires, reclaimed asphalt pavement and classical geotechnical research with Pressuremeter instrumentation and pile driving in soils that produce excessive pile rebound. He has worked on numerous geotechnical and geo-environmental consulting projects; reviewed papers and proposals for national research organizations and is a registered Professional Engineer in Florida. He is a member of the ASCE Airfield Pavements Committee and the Transportation Research Board's University Representative. He has served as a lecturer for short courses on Landfill Design, and Pavement Design plus Shallow and Deep foundations. 

Dr. Cosentino has taught 15 different courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels and has served as the ASCE Student Chapter Advisor bringing National Attention to the University.  In 1997, FIT was crowned National Concrete Canoe Champion, being the only private school to accomplish this feat.  In addition, FIT has been to this National Event 7 times and finished in the top 5, three times and hosted in 1999.

The Florida Department of Transportation has granted a $250,000 research contract to Dr. Paul Cosentino, a professor in the Civil Engineering Department at the Florida Institute of Technology.  This 2-year contract calls for Dr. Cosentino’s research team to determine how Ground tire rubber (GTR), which is manufactured from recycled tires, can be blended with roadbed soils from around Florida to determine if their engineering properties can be improved.

GTR comes from the waste tire stream that is not reused for fuel, rubber, exportation, or landfilled. GTR has been blended with the asphalt used in hot mix asphalt pavement to improve performance and quality. Recently, however, various asphalt emulsion additives can be blended to produce pavements that are better suited for high volume roads such as interstates. These new products mean that GTR stockpiles, which can be manufactured over a range of sizes between two inches and one millimeter, will increase and new uses need to be explored.  

The objective of this research is to determine the key pavement engineering properties for blends of GTR and highway subgrade soils.  These findings will be used to develop recommendations detailing how the acceptable blends should be used in FDOT’s highways.

The 24-month contract will be completed by performing a series of tasks, including literature reviews, developing GTR sources and sizing, and determining optimum engineering blend proportions. The testing will be divided into two parts, an initial screening followed by a more thorough testing evaluation. Three different subgrade soils, commonly used in Florida highways, will be evaluated to determine the optimum blend of GTR.

 Dr. David Horhota is the project manager for FDOT and Dr. Albert Bleakley, an Associate Professor in FIT’s Construction Program, is Dr. Cosentino’s Co-principal investigator.  The graduate research team includes, Amir Mmohammad Sajjadi, Thaddeus J Misilo IV, and Alex Armstrong.
