Personal Overview

I am presently stationed at NASA Headquarters in Washington DC via an Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) grant. The IPA program provides for the temporary assignment of personnel between the Federal Government and eligible organizations like Florida Tech.

As a professor of Physics & Space Sciences, I see my professional mission as:  1) advancing humanity's understanding of the universe through scientific inquiry; 2) passing on the detailed knowledge of this process and its results to the next generation; and 3) service to humanity and country.

I currently lead a research group at FIT that hacks stars to understand the fundamental interactions of plasmas and electromagnetic fields, develop new in-space propulsion technologies, and investigate Galactic structure and evolution. 

Communicating the scientific process and the results of modern science to students and the public in the U.S. and around the world is one of my passions. I currently appear regularly in several television series. On Science Channel I co-host Outrageous Acts of Science, How the Universe Works, Strip the Cosmos, and NASA's Unexplained Files. On Discovery International I co-host You Have Been Warned and Deadly Dilemmas and . Finally, I have offered scientific expertise to news programs on CNN, NBC, MSNBC, and Fox News.
