Fraternity and Sorority Housing Vision

Vision Statement Greek Village March 2007

The housing facilities in the Florida Institute of Technology Greek Village will serve as living quarters for approximately 14-18 students and will be utilized by the entire Greek chapter to hold chapter meetings, executive council meetings, committee meetings, ritual ceremonies, recruitment events, social events, alumni events. It will also house the chapter's memorabilia which includes composite pictures from past years, trophies, scrapbooks, and awards.

The houses should contain the comforts of a traditional home to include a large living room (which would also serve as a chapter meeting room for all members), den/lounge, kitchen with a pantry, dining area/lounge, laundry/utility room, and an optional study/computer room. The house should contain enough bedrooms to allow a maximum of two occupants to each bedroom with no more than four occupants sharing a bathroom.

The floor plans of the houses will be identical with slight variations as acceptable to the builder. The facade of the houses will be different and consider the chapter's preference and styling. The houses should have some type of front porch and a back patio with sizeable backyards for events. The chapters will be permitted to add some personal touches to the house such as tiled Greek letters or Greek crest/symbols in the entryway or other appropriate areas of the house that could be easily modified in the event the chapter left campus in the future. The house will be revered by the members who use it during their college years and will need to have longevity as many of the occupants will return to visit as alumni.

Description of common space and functionality

The common spaces in the house need to be large enough to handle numerous people and should be built to withstand the volume and traffic of the occupants, chapter members and guests. All of the common spaces should be built with a consideration to noise and soundproofing.

The living room/chapter room will function as a chapter room wherein the chapter can hold meetings and ritual ceremonies and will need to be big enough to hold approximately 75-85 people comfortably. A trophy or award case could be built in the living room/chapter room. On the first floor, the house will need at least a half bath for use by non-occupants and guests and may be built under the stairwell(s).

The kitchen will need to be of sufficient size to be used by the approximately 18 residents all week and to be used when certain chapter events are held. The kitchen will need a pantry for occupants to use to store food items.

The dining area/lounge should contain space for tables and possibly have a half wall with louver doors into the kitchen and/or chapter room.

The laundry/utility room should contain a washer, dryer and a utility tub and contain a door to the outside. The den should be a smaller sized living room where chapters can have a television or other recreation items.

The optional study/computer room should have no windows and be able to hold small desks/tables.

The houses will need a lot of closet and storage space for memorabilia, ritual equipment, recruitment items, sports equipment, common household items and cleaning supplies, etc.

Description of the idea village concept

The Florida Tech Greek Village should have a community building which sits at the beginning of the community or in the middle of the community which would likely contain extra laundry facilities, vending machines, post office boxes for Greek residents/members, lounge area with recreation games/meeting room, and offices for the Greek Adviser, Panhellenic and IFC. The community building should have a traditional Greek House facade with columns and should contain some type of ornamental brick, tile, structure etc... that celebrates each Greek Organization with the possibility to add and/or modify the structure in the future as groups leave and/or join the campus. The community should be gated for security purposes with members having to use a keycard to enter the community. The common areas should have light poles that provide sufficient lighting as well as have the capacity to have flags attached that announce certain Greek ideals (Leadership, Philanthrophy, etc...) and/or current or upcoming chapter events.

Approximate number of bedrooms/bathrooms

FIRST FLOOR: Each house should contain two bedrooms on the first floor with a shared bathroom. Each bedroom would house one occupant. At least one of these rooms would need to be made handicap accessible.

SECOND FLOORD: Each house should contain 7-8 bedrooms and 4-5 bathrooms on the second floor which would house two occupants per room. Two bedrooms could share one large bathroom to accommodate four occupants. Some bedrooms might have a smaller bathroom used solely by the two occupants in that room.

HOUSE TOTAL: 9 - 10 bedrooms; 5 - 6 full bathrooms;

One half bathroom for guests on the first floor
