Sexually Transmitted Diseases Testing

STD's and College Students - the Threat is Real but usually Unknown.....

Recent statistics find 1 in 4 sexually active students will contract an STD sometime during their college years. The freedom of independent living, the availability of alcohol, and peer pressure can place students in some risky situations. Please read this recent article in the Florida Tech Crimson. Important information: The USPTF requires that most Health Insurance plans cover annual screening for Gonorrhea and Chlamydia (urine test) free for women, and free screening for HIV and syphilis annually for men and women.

Gardisil, the vaccine for Human Pappiloma Virus, is available at the Health Center. Insurance is required to cover this vaccine at 100% for all men and women 26 and under.

If you are concerned that you may have been exposed and or are just interested in being screened, please come in for confidential free counseling and testing  With health insurance, some of the tests are free and others can be offered at a minimal charge. Call the Health Center at 674-8078 or email healthcenter@fit.edu for more details.The Health Center offers screening for Gonorrhea/Chlamydia (Urine) at a charge of $35.00 through Quest Laboratory for individuals who do not want to use their health insurance.   Screening for Sexually Transmitted Diseases is testing for an infection in the absence of physical symptoms.

If you are currently experiencing symptoms of infection you can be seen and treated at either the Holzer Health Center or the BCHD and have appropriate testing performed. Most insurance plans will cover a portion of the cost for diagnosis and treatment when the individual is symptomatic.  The staff at the Health Center can discuss this with you and offer treatment or assist you in obtaining an appointment off campus.
