During Spring Break
2003 (Feb. 27–March 9), Professors Jones and Ruane will take
approximately 30 students to Budapest and Vienna to attend
lectures and discussions in some of the world’s greatest
museums and historical sites. This three-credit course (an HU/SS
elective) introduces students to the history, politics, art,
and architecture of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (c.
1700–1918) and 20th-century Hungary.
This
study-abroad trip gives you the opportunity to explore first
hand the world detailed in the textbooks and primary source
materials discussed before the trip. In Budapest, students
will attend lectures by Professors Jones and Ruane in the
Museum of Fine Arts, the Hungarian National Gallery,
Parliament, St. Stephen’s Basilica, St. Mary’s Church, the
Military History Museum, the Terror Museum, and many other
important sites. In Vienna, students will attend lectures by
Jones and Ruane in Schönbrunn Palace, Hofburg Palace and its
treasuries, the Vienna Secession Building, the Leopold Gallery
of Modern Art, the Upper Belvedere Palace and Museum, St.
Stephan’s Cathedral, and the Military History Museum, and
other important sites. Students will also have time to explore
these exciting cities on their own. In Budapest, students will
have plenty of opportunities to socialize with Hungarian
students from our host university and to attend a guest
lecture about “Life under Communism.”
