Money Matters

  • Use air miles, coupons or shop around for the best flight prices. Flights with 1+ stops to London Heathrow or Gatwick, or Birmingham International range between $1100 and $1600 for summer 2012.  Non-Stop flights from Orlando to London Gatwick are $1700-$2000 as of March 9, 2011.
  • Budget an average of $20 - $30 per day for food/entertainment ($780 - $1170).  Students spent between $600 & $1500 for food/entertainment in 2011.  It depends on your habits- if you buy sandwiches and groceries and cook you will spend less than if you eat out often.  Weekend trips can range from low cost up to $700+ depending on where you go and what you do.
  • ATMs are available throughout the city of Oxford and the entire UK. Your bank may charge you a slight fee to use the ATM, but getting cash is fast and easy. Major credit cards are accepted in most shops. There is no need for travelers' checks.
  • 26 meals are included in program fees.  You will be responsible for remaining meals, but you do have full kitchen access for the final 3.5 weeks. Grocery stores and sandwich shops are within close walking distance of the college. A typical "sandwich deal" with a filled baguette, chips or fruit, and a drink is 3.33 GBP ($5.60).  13 breakfasts, 6 big lunches, and 5 nice dinners are included in your housing fees.
  • Budget some money for weekend trips. You may want to book some in advance, but see the program director for suggestions. (Travel within the UK, Ireland, France, etc. is very easy and can cost as little as $300 for a full weekend if you stay in hostels.  A more average price is $600+ if you are taking a flight, long train journey, and staying in b & bs or hotels.)

Even more savings on tuition by going to Oxford!

You can save over $2000 on future tuition dollars by going to Oxford and taking 6-7 credit hours this summer!

When you take 6-7 hours in the summer it means you can reduce your final semester by 6-7 hours...this can save you over $2,000 on tuition.

Here's how it works- Flat rate tuition is for 12-19 credit hours. For engineering/science students flat rate for a semester is $16,580 (through Spring 2012). One credit hour is currently $995.

Let's say you would have needed 16 hours in spring of your senior year ($16,580), but you took 6 hours in Oxford ($4,478). Now, in spring of your senior year you only need to take 10 hours and pay $9950 ($995x 10 hours). This $9950 combined with the $4,478 for Oxford is $14,428. So you save $2,152 off of tuition is spring of your senior year by taking 6 hours in Oxford.  A wise choice!
