ISRS Library Awards for 2003
The International Society for Reef Studies (ISRS) is very pleased to announce the winners of its Library Awards for 2003. It received 27 applications, and a committee of the ISRS Council made their choice of 10 successful applicants based on criteria of relevance of the applicants' missions to coral reef studies, the number of people who would be likely to make use of the materials, the quality of arrangements for access and the track record of contributions made by the institution so far. Most of the applicants would have been worthy recipients, but in the end, we selected the following institutions:
  • Phuket Marine Biological Centre, Thailand
  • Discovery Bay Marine Laboratory, Jamaica
  • Marine Biological Station, Zoological Survey of India, Chennai, India
  • Silliman University Marine Laboratory, Dumaguete City, Philippines
  • The Institute of Marine and Coastal Research of Colombia -INVEMAR, Santa Marta, Colombia
  • Institute of Marine Sciences, Zanzibar, Tanzania
  • CORALINA, Corporation for the sustainable development of the archipelago of San Andres, Old Providence and Santa Catalina, Colombia
  • Unidad Académica - Sistemas Arrecifales, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México Puerto Morelos, Mexico
  • University of Southeastern Philippines, Davao City, Philippines
  • University of Asmara, Eritrea Through the generosity of a number of authors and publishers, and a contribution of funds from
ISRS, we are offering 10 sets of books (Corals of the world by JEN Veron and M. Stafford-Smith; Soft Corals and Sea Fans by K. Fabricius and P. Alderslade; Systema Porifera by J. Hooper and R. van Soest; Proceedings of the 9th International Coral Reef Symposium, Bali, Indonesia, 2000; Perspectives on Coral Reefs edited by D. Barnes) and subscriptions to the ISRS journal Coral Reefs and ISRS newsletter Reef Encounter for the triennium 2003-05.

The ISRS is delighted to support these developing-country institutions in this way, and thanks the authors and publishers (Springer-Verlag and Kluwer), the Local Organizing Committee of the 9 ICRS, AIMS and the ISRS Library Awards Sub-committee led by Terry Done, without whose generosity and support, this Award would not have been possible.
