Health Insurance

As there is no socialized or national system of health care in the United States and medical treatment is expensive. ALL international students are required to maintain full health insurance coverage throughout their course of study. University health insurance is automatically billed to your student account each semester as a part of your tuition and fees, meaning you will be covered through Florida Tech’s student health insurance plan.

Florida Tech has teamed with Markel Insurance Company to provide a user-friendly student health plan. Filing a claim is as easy as logging onto www.studentassist.com (password 0277). In addition to an on-line claims form, the site also features a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section about the claims process and the current brochure. For Urgent claims, inquires, and elgibilty call 1-866-653-2542 or email student@pioneerhealth.com.

Markel is a leading provider of collegiate student accident and health insurance. To find out more about Markel and their products and services, check out their web site at www.markelcorp.com.

Markel also offers on-campus assistance on Monday and Wednesday 10:00 am - 4:00 pm and Thursday 9:00 am-12:00 pm in the Student Life Office.  Call (321) 674-8280 to schedule an appointment with Helen Jennings.

Some international students are officially sponsored by their home government or an agency which guarantees their health insurance fees as part of their contract with Florida Tech. Students in this category may be eligible to receive a waiver of the Florida Tech health insurance fee.

Requesting a Waiver

A waiver of the Florida Tech health insurance fee may be possible only when very strict requirements have been met. If you carry insurance from your home country (or other sponsor) that covers you while you are in the United States, you may request a waiver, which must be submitted to Florida Tech  together with proof of your own health insurance.

It should be noted that the deadline for processing health insurance waivers is the end of the second week of class each semester. There are no exceptions.  For further information regarding health insurance waivers contact Campus Services.

Dependent Coverage

All international students who are married or single parents with one or more children living with them may purchase health insurance for their dependents by completing the appropriate form in the Campus Services Office and paying for the additional insurance at the Comptroller’s office.  Note:   If your dependent(s) enroll at Florida Tech they will be charged for their own university health insurance, unless a waiver is requested by the required deadline.

Vaccinations

Preventing many diseases is best accomplished with vaccinations. Find further information at http://www.fit.edu/health/documents/doc_mgr/167/vaccine_info.pdf

Where Do I Go For Treatment?

Students should go to the Holtzer Student Health Center on campus (http://www.fit.edu/health/) which maintains services designed to meet the primary health care needs of all Florida Tech students.

If you have further questions regarding health insurance requirements, or wish to enquire about the health insurance waiver process, please contact Campus Services at (321) 674-8076.
