America's Natural Gas Alliance and Florida Tech Join in Student-Led Campaign; Event Open to Public Nov. 8

11/01/2012

MELBOURNE, FLA.—Florida Institute of Technology MBA students have formed a student-led team that has taken on the challenge of educating and informing the campus community about natural gas; they also will measure the effect of the campaign on public opinion of natural gas usage and development.

The project is designed to give students a unique, hands-on, real-world business experience of creating a marketing campaign for a national organization. The campaign is designed to raise awareness that America’s Natural Gas Alliance (ANGA) and the natural gas community are dedicated to the safe and responsible development of this clean, affordable and domestic energy source for power generation and transportation.

An outdoor event called the Clear Choice Natural Gas Expo will be held Thursday, Nov. 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., on the Crawford Green, Florida Tech’s Melbourne campus. As the flagship event of the campaign, this high-profile expo will offer fun, informative and educational activities, natural gas industry and transportation exhibits and light refreshments. Game winners will receive premium giveaways, such as USB drives and T-shirts.

Although it is expected that students will primarily attend the event, Florida Tech staff and faculty, and the public may also attend. An exit survey will measure awareness and changes in perception about natural gas usage and development.

In this integrated marketing project, called the ANGA Collegiate Energy Challenge, Florida Tech is competing with universities from across the nation for the Scholastic Achievement Award, which will be awarded to the top three teams that achieve the most effective project results. These teams will be invited to present their campaigns to ANGA executives in Washington, D.C., and will have the opportunity to win cash awards for their university.

The Florida Tech team has formed into four agency departments, Research, Promotion, Information Technology and Finance, each led by a director. A survey was conducted by the team’s Research Department to assess the attitudes of the target market in relation to natural gas development. The Promotion Department created the advertising strategy and worked on preparing advertising materials. The IT Department developed Facebook, Twitter, and web presences, and the Finance Department is responsible for accounting and budget support. All team members participate in regular meetings to check progress against planning deadlines and to brainstorm on how to deliver a successful campaign that meets the project objectives.
