MELBOURNE, FLA.—Florida Institute of Technology honored several alumni high achievers at the 2012 Homecoming Gala, held on campus in November. Among them was CarMax President and CEO Tom Folliard. He was awarded the Jerome P. Keuper Distinguished Alumni Award.

Each of the university’s five college deans nominated one person for an Outstanding Alumnus Award from their respective colleges.

“The Keuper award honors an alumnus who embodies all that is good about the university. This is someone who is in a successful career, known for community involvement and who gives back to the university,” said Bino Campanini, assistant vice president, alumni relations and executive director of the Alumni Association. “Tom Folliard is an ideal example of such a person.”

The 6-foot, 3-inch Folliard was a standout basketball player for the university while he worked toward his bachelor’s degree, which he earned in 1989. He was inducted into the Florida Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 1996.

Others honored included Chris Fernando, who took home the Graduate of the Last Decade (GOLD) Award.

Outstanding alumni, selected from each of the university’s five colleges, were: Travis Proctor ’98 B.S. of Melbourne, College of Engineering, who was the only local honoree; Joe Caruso ‘73 B.S., Nathan M. Bisk College of Business; Max Mutchler ’90 M.S., College of Science; Candace Bowering ’99 M.S., College of Psychology and Liberal Arts; and David Byers ’78 B.S., ’04 Ph.D., College of Aviation Skurla Award.
