MELBOURNE, FLA.—The Florida Institute of Technology Department of Online Learning will host Andy DiPaolo, executive director emeritus of the Stanford Center for Professional Development (SCPD) and former senior associate dean of the Engineering School at Stanford University, Feb. 20, for a presentation. His lecture, “Choices and Challenges: Lessons Learned in the Evolution of Online Education,” will be held in the F.W. Olin Engineering Complex, Room 118, from 3-4 p.m.

Through his presentation, DiPaolo will explore the critical challenges and lessons learned by academic institutions delivering online education and how these lessons may be applied to assess opportunities. He will address the potential and risks of online education, identify the changing education needs and expectations of students, share lessons learned from the rise of new higher education providers and offer advice on strategies for institutions to successfully deliver programs at a distance.

For over 20 years, DiPaolo led one of the largest university continuing education organizations and distance education networks in the United States in delivering credit and professional education programs worldwide. Also the founding executive director of the Stanford Center for Professional Development (SCPD), he helped develop Stanford Online and the Stanford Engineering Everywhere initiative to provide complete open courses to educators and students. In 2005, SCPD received the coveted Association for Continuing Higher Education’s "Most Outstanding Professional Education Program in the U.S.” award.

DiPaolo is a longtime member of national and international boards and advisor to universities, corporations and government agencies in the U.S., Europe and Asia. Before joining Stanford in 1988, DiPaolo held several faculty and administrative positions at Boston University, the University of Toledo and Indiana University.
