INCOSE Certified Systems Engineering Professional

Florida Institute of Technology is offering a two-day intensive training program for those with a systems engineering background who desire CSEP certification.

The 2-Day CSEP Exam Prep course provides an in-depth review of the INCOSE Systems Engineering Handbook version 3.2.1 which became the official basis for the certification exam in January 2011.*

  • Understand the INCOSE CSEP certification process, application requirements, and renewal steps
  • Study sample CSEP exam questions and create their own sample exam questions for continued study
  • Write resume experience description segments of the CSEP application
  • Understand the INCOSE Handbook v3.2.1 layout, contents, and methods to study the information with regard to exam structure
  • Link INCOSE Handbook v3.2.1 topics to real-life experience examples

Participants are expected to utilize the knowledge gained from the tutorial including study tips and sample exam questions to enhance their detailed study in preparation to sit for the exam.

  • Participants will begin reviewing the Handbook chapters including Life Cycle stages and the technical processes from requirements to architecture and IV&V.
  • Day 1: introduces INCOSE and the CSEP program and includes study tips, application guidance, certification requirements and other details on the certification process.
  • Day 2: continues with the Handbook review including Project, Agreement, and Organizational Enabling Processes, Tailoring Approaches, and Specialty Engineering Analyses.

*Additionally included in the course is an optional two-day study group led by the instructor so that students may follow up on any study or exam questions they might have.
The study group is held two weeks after the course and is optional.

Martin McClellan

Mr. McClellan has a Master of Science in Space Systems and has 27 years of experience as an aerospace engineer. Mr. McClellan started his engineering career with Perkin Elmer Corporation as a Contamination Control Engineer on the Hubble Space Telescope Optical Telescope Assembly. There he managed the Contamination Control and Facility Monitoring Programs during the build of the Optical Telescope Assembly. As a result of his work there, he published two papers in the Journal of Environmental Sciences. One titled “Monitoring Contamination and Component Cleaning for the Hubble Space Telescope” and the other titled “Avoiding Molecular Contamination in Clean Rooms”. After the completion of the Hubble Space Telescope build he moved on to a position as a Contamination Control Engineer for the Space Shuttle Orbiter with Lockheed Space Operations where he was responsible for the Crew Compartment, Payload Bay and Aft Compartment Contamination Control. In November of 1998 he became a Test Project Engineer (Systems Integration Engineer) for United Space Alliance. He remained in that position until July of 2011 when the Space Shuttle Program ended. In addition to teaching, Mr. McClellan holds the role as Speaker Coordinator for SpaceCoast Technical Network.

Overview:

Established by INCOSE in March 2004, the Systems Engineering Professional provides a formal method for recognizing the knowledge and experience of systems engineers. The certification helps serve as a discriminator for employment progression, can provide a competitive advantage in career advancement, and provides a portable Systems Engineering designation that is recognized across industries.

There are multi-levels of base credentials:

  • INCOSE Associate Systems Engineering Professional (ASEP) - Entry Level
  • INCOSE Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) - Foundation Level
  • INCOSE Expert Systems Engineering Professional (ESEP) - Senior Level
  • INCOSE Certified Systems Engineering Professional Acquisition Extension - Extension

For each certification level the requirements, application, and fees vary.

Associate Systems Engineering Professional

  • Targeted towards Systems Engineers with limited work experience
  • Ideal for junior/emerging Systems Engineers and recent college graduates
  • ASEPs are certified against education and knowledge
  • Application fee is $150
  • Examination fee is $80 (testing held at a Prometric site)
  • Renewal fee for certification is $100 every 5 years
  • This level of ASEP certification must maintain INCOSE membership to maintain certification

Certified Systems Engineering Professional

  • Targeted towards Systems Engineers with 5 or more years work experience
  • CSEPs are certified against experience, education, and knowledge requirements
  • Applications must be substantiated by 3-5 references that can vouch for the applicants system engineering experience
  • Application fee is $300 (which includes membership fee), without a member ship the application fee is $400
  • Examination fee is $80 (testing held at a Prometric site)
  • Renewal fee for CSEP certification is $100 (if a member of INCOSE) every 3 years, without INCOSE membership renewal is $150 every 3 years
  • This level of CSEP certification does not require an individual to maintain INCOSE membership, however by doing so fees are lowered for the application and renewal

Expert Systems Engineering Professional

  • Targeted towards Systems Engineers with significant work experience and demonstrated systems accomplishments
  • ESEPs are certified against accomplishment, experience and education requirements
  • Interviews are used to validate significant systems and accomplishments
  • Application fee is $550
  • Examination fee is not applicable as interviews are used in place of filling out the application
  • There is no fee for renewal for the ESEP, however the individual must maintain membership
  • This level of ESEP certification must maintain INCOSE membership to maintain certification

Certified Systems Engineering Professional Acquisition Extension

  • Targeted towards Systems Engineers who support or work in a US Department of the Defense acquisition environment
  • Same core CSEP experience, education and knowledge requirements
  • Additional acquisition knowledge items tested
  • Application fee is $200
  • Examination fee is $65 (testing held at a Prometric site)
  • Renewal for the CSEP Acquisition Extension is an additional $50 (non-INCOSE members) and $25 (for INCOSE members) inclusive of the CSEP renewal fee, every 3 years

Additional information about CSEP certification may be found on the INCOSE Web site.
