Got a Question About ...
Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology
Focused primarily on understanding the interactions between the various systems of a cell, molecular biology is the field of science that will likely lead to a cure for cancer. The molecular biology degree provides training in DNA and protein purification, recombinant DNA technology, gene manipulation, gene expression assays and genomics. Heavy in math and chemistry, the molecular biology degree is perfect preparation for students interested in medical, veterinary and dental fields.
The pinnacle of the program is the senior laboratory experience, during which students spend up to 20 hours a week doing hands-on research using the same high-tech tools and techniques as professional molecular biologists. Students completing the molecular biology degree program qualify for employment in the rapidly growing biotechnology industry as well as entry into graduate study in a wide variety of areas encompassed by molecular biology and in medical programs.
Gain Practical Experience Through Research
As a student in the program, you can undertake exciting independent or collaborative (with a peer or professor) research in a topic of your choosing. Led by faculty mentors deeply committed to your success, the molecular biology program involves you directly in hands-on research. By working in research labs alongside faculty, graduate students and fellow undergraduates, you build valuable skills and a highly competitive résumé working real-life challenges. As a result, you get practical experience, an enhanced job search portfolio and the perfect preparation for graduate school and employment.
Build Professional Relationships
Beyond the classroom, molecular biology degree majors build leadership and professional experience through exciting internships and participation in academic organizations like Tri Beta (biological sciences honor society), the Premed Club, Student Government and over 100 other student organizations. Each of these experiences gives you a way to interact with other students and learn about research and internship opportunities.
Get Recruited Upon Graduation
Employers consistently recruit Florida Tech students for internships and careers such as the American Museum of Natural Science, Baltimore Aquarium, EPCOT, Florida Medical Entomology Lab and Sea World.
Earn an Advanced Molecular Biology Degree
After receiving a molecular biology degree, many of our students go on to masters and doctoral programs at Florida Tech and other prestigious universities, such as Miami University, Harvard, Columbia, University of Florida, Johns Hopkins and Duke.
