King of Crustaceans
Dr. Richard Tankersley and his students are usually knee-deep in the local Indian River Lagoon, studying the larval stages of many crustaceans including blue crabs and horseshoe crabs, not only benefiting the research but the student experience as well!

Florida Tech's ecology department faculty are involved in research and teaching. Students learn from world-renowned chemists in an environment that encourages undergraduate participation in research projects. High-tech laboratories filled with modern instrumentation
Other conservation and ecology universities can't match the "natural" laboratories available to our students. As a student at Florida Tech, you have access to the Atlantic Ocean marine ecosystems, as well as nearby natural resources such as forests and the estuarine habitats of the Indian River Lagoon, which is ideal for biological research. Florida Tech's curriculum emphasizes experimental design and investigation, making classes challenging and interesting.
Florida Tech is considered one of the best conservation and ecology universities because students have access to the Olin Physical Sciences Center (and Instrumentation Center), a 70,000-square-foot facility that houses the Chemistry Department, faculty laboratories, state-of-the-art instrumentation and rooms for NMR spectrometers, photochemistry, glassblowing and computational chemistry.
One of the best preparations an undergraduate can have if they want to go on to graduate school is to author a published paper. Florida Tech professors strive to make this goal attainable and students frequently become published authors as undergraduates.

Other conservation and ecology universities can't compete with Florida Tech's location. Our beautiful 130-acre campus is located in Melbourne, Florida, at the heart of the Space Coast. Not only is the area near 72 miles of Atlantic Ocean beaches, it is minutes away from the Indian River Lagoon, the most diverse estuary in North America. There are many attractions that are also easily accessible, such as the NASA Kennedy Space Center, Brevard Zoo, Port Canaveral, Sebastian Inlet and Orlando theme parks.
