What is an Electrical Engineering degree?

Facilities: The F.W. Olin Engineering Complex has three levels linked by the latest electronic and communications technology which promotes cross-functional learning. A 142-seat multimedia auditorium and 26 specialized research and teaching laboratories support multiple departments within the College of Engineering. A fixture of the F.W. Olin Engineering Complex is the A-frame teaching laboratory, a configuration that promotes cooperative learning by design. Most ECE courses and laboratories are held in the F.W. Olin Engineering Complex, a technology-based multi-million dollar building with the latest in multimedia and information technology. The building houses six advanced teaching labs and multimedia auditorium, providing students with a high-tech environment outfitted with the instruments and equipment they will encounter in the workplace.

Research: Electrical engineering degree majors have many opportunities to undertake challenging and exciting research. As part of their senior design projects, students have:
- Automated object detection and perception, segmentation, texture analysis, noise reduction, edge detection, computer imaging, modeling and other areas of image analysis
- Investigated the use of devices embedded directly into an individual antenna element to provide control of the far-field phase of the antenna
- Explored a design methodology and collection of computer algorithms that are intended for incorporation in a specific software program for a given application
- Done photonic research on fiber-optic sensors and communications systems, laser radar and remote sensing, and laser scanning for robot vision
- Designed high-performance computing applications such as optimized software-engineered computer communications between computer subsystems
