Imagine. Design. Build.
The Harris Student Design Center, also known as the PantherWorks, is an 11,500 square-foot work and meeting space that facilitates the ideation, planning, designing, assembling and testing of capstone engineering and science projects.
Computer Engineering Internships and Research Opportunities
Internships are a Valuable Part of Career Preparation
Internships are an important and valuable part of hands-on learning for students to gain insight into computer engineering careers. Computer engineering students may expect small classes and the opportunity to work with faculty in a variety of study areas. The program's reputation and proximity to a variety of high-tech companies means you can also expect to find many computer engineering internships and build valuable on-the-job experience.
Outside the classroom, Florida Tech students are able to obtain computer engineering internships at many local and national companies, including:
- Harris Corp.
- Northrop Grumman
These computer engineering internships allow students to build valuable work experience and make connections that help them succeed in the workplace after college.
In addition to computer engineering internships, Florida Tech students are able to complete research on a wide variety of computer engineering topics on faculty research teams, including:
- Internet programming
- Wireless systems
- Speech and image processing
- Machine learning
With real-world research experience and computer engineering internships in a variety of fields, our graduates are better prepared for a future career or graduate school. Our faculty includes one IEEE Fellow, one IEEE Life Fellow, a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Signal and Imaging Systems Engineering.
Hands-On Opportunity to Show the Industry Why They Need You
Besides computer engineering internships, Florida Tech computer engineering students, over the course of their senior year, create a senior design project. These projects serve as a hands-on opportunity for students to utilize the knowledge they've gained during their studies. Topics for these projects vary widely. Some past student projects include:
- An electric racing vehicle
- An automatic trash-collecting robot
- Home automation control by cell phones
Students present their senior design projects at the annual Student Design Showcase alongside other students from different departments across Florida Tech.
Part of what makes Florida Tech a great place to study computer engineering is the F. W. Olin Engineering Complex, a state-of-the-art facility that reflects Florida Tech's commitment to academic excellence and cutting-edge programs, and provides an outstanding learning environment for undergraduates.
Join Organizations to Enhance Your Degree
In addition to research and computer engineering internships, students can join professional organizations. Florida Tech's student chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (known as FIT-IEEE) competes in robotics competitions and professional conferences. Eta Kappa Nu is an honor society designed to recognize engineering and computer sciences students for outstanding academic achievements during their time at Florida Tech.
High achieving students may also become members of Tau Beta Pi, a national engineering honor society.
