Cool Stuff: Mini Baja Cars
First comes the design, then the construction, and before you know it Mini Baja design team members are getting down and dirty. They're bouncing over rugged terrain, jumping over boulders and flying over jumps at test tracks.

Imagine. Design. Build.
The Harris Student Design Center, also known as the PantherWorks, is an 11,500 square-foot work and meeting space that facilitates the ideation, planning, designing, assembling and testing of capstone engineering and science projects.
Blog: Minute Machines; Large Impact
Florida Tech investigates micro-scale vibratory systems. Very small devices on the scale of 1-100 micrometers; have rich research potential.
Videos: Student Design Projects
Project-based learning through student design gives students an experiential platform that helps them acquire highly sought-after workplace skills.
Research Programs and Mechanical Engineering Internships
Work with Professionals at NASA, Boeing, Harris and More
From mechanical engineering internships to research to clubs and organizations, Florida Tech students enjoy a variety of activities for a well-rounded college experience.
Our students are able to participate in a wide array of mechanical engineering internships with companies around the Space Coast, including:
- Lockheed Martin
- Harris Corporation
- Pratt and Whitney
These mechanical engineering internships allow Florida Tech students to work hand-in-hand with professional engineers working to solve problems in the field. Some students even find that these cooperative experiences later lead to job offers from the companies in which they worked with.
Mechanical engineering internships aren't the only learning opportunities outside of classroom study. Florida Tech students are able to take part in real-world research that prepares them for their future career or graduate school. Select students are handpicked to work with department professors on research teams. Our students are also able to conduct research during their mechanical engineering internships and in preparation for their capstone senior design project. Some student research is even supported and sponsored by local employers, including NASA.
Senior Design Projects
Mechanical engineering students create a capstone senior design project in their last year at Florida Tech. These cooperative endeavors are the culmination of years of studying and research and take a variety of forms. Some previous projects have included:
- Panther 1 Pathfinder Rocket
- Formula SAE Race Car
- SAE Mini Baja
- The Racing Electric Vehicle
- The Performance Hybrid Race Car
These projects are displayed at the annual Student Design Showcase and are often entered into national competitions against other student projects.
Join Clubs and Organizations to Enhance Your Mechanical Engineering Degree
In addition to mechanical engineering internships, Florida Tech students participate in many student organizations based around their mechanical engineering interests.
Florida Tech's chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers is an active organization that holds meetings, facility tours, competitions and other events that cover a wide variety of topics within the field. Tau Beta Pi is an honor society for student engineers who excel academically and are recognized for their achievements. The Society of Women Engineers promotes both female and male engineers through lectures and meetings.
