What is the Premed Program in Physics?

The premed program in physics offers the courses needed to meet the entrance requirements of essentially all schools of medicine, dentistry, osteopathic medicine, podiatry and optometry. The premedical adviser organizes a premedical evaluation committee to provide evaluation letters for students applying to medical school. Students graduating with premed program in physics degrees have very high acceptance rates into medical and professional schools.

The Florida Tech premed program in physics is one of a very select few of its kind in the U.S. Students in the program choose from a wide range of research topics in physics, astrophysics, space sciences and atmospheric physics, with subjects ranging from distant black holes, x-rays from lightning and the search for the Higgs boson. In terms of undergraduate degrees earned annually, our pre-medical track can be compared to some of the best premed colleges in the country. Our premed program in physics is well within the top 10% of the largest programs in the U.S. and students are highly encouraged to join and get actively involved in one of the various research groups in the department.

Florida Tech student researchers have gone to national conferences and won various awards. A few of our students have even published papers with the help of their faculty advisors on topics such as:

Other universities and corporations also play a big role in our student's college experience through summer research programs. Many of our students conduct research at locations such as the Life Science Labs at the Kennedy Space Center, the Midwest Research Institute, and the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.
