Bachelor of Science in Communication Military Option
The communication field offers a wide variety of opportunities for professionals to write for a broad range of audiences in public relations, marketing, publications research and production, web content development, customer relations, technical writing and mass media.
A communication degree demands students think critically, creatively and independently; write correctly and clearly; and to work ethically in pursuit of accuracy, fairness and diversity. Whether you want to become a professional writer, leader in the field of creative advertising or a top public relations executive, a communication degree from Florida Tech develops a strong background in communication with experience in both print and electronic publishing.
The military option prepares Florida Tech ROTC cadets to serve as commissioned officers in the United States Army, Army Reserve and Army National Guard. Technical, scientific and military studies are incorporated into the curriculum with emphasis on applied leadership and problem-solving skills.
Current first- and second-year students who have no prior military service and who seek an Army ROTC scholarship may attend the 32-day Leader's Training Course that provides basic military and problem-solving skills combined with physical training. Students incur no service commitment on completion of this course.
Graduates with a communication degree are able to create effective communication analyses and campaigns, write for a broad range of audiences about science and technology, and use multiple media platforms to effectively and ethically communicate to diverse publics. They could also find jobs such as publicity officers in a base environment.
Gain Practical Experience
From the student newspaper, to the university blog and on-campus NPR affiliate WFIT-FM, portfolio-building projects abound at Florida Tech. This hands-on learning challenges students on the road to becoming strategic communication professionals, ensuring they are skilled in the use of multiple media platforms. Because professional communicators must develop an array of skills and adapt to rapidly changing industry standards, Florida Tech's communication degree program boasts a learning environment where classes are small, mentorship is high and real-world internships are plentiful.
As seniors, students engage in a dynamic internship in their field at nearby media companies or high-tech corporations. Faculty in the communications program also have a variety of research interests including corporate communication, reputation management and communication and social issues. Students are encouraged to participate in research as part of their communication degree program.
As a result, students get practical experience, an enhanced job search portfolio and expanded professional network – the perfect preparation for graduate and professional school, and employment.

Beyond the classroom, communication degree students build leadership experience through participation in academic organizations like the Florida Public Relations Association, Crimson (student newspaper), WCRR Student-Run Radio, FITV Video Productions, student government and over 100 other campus-wide student organizations.
