Master's in Biological Oceanography At Florida Tech
Train With An Emphasis on The Ocean's Biological Environments
Oceanography is a broad, multidisciplinary science that integrates the expertise and skills of ocean scientists with that of engineers. Florida Tech's master's in oceanography is a research-centric program that focuses on study of:
- Ocean currents and waves
- Coastal processes
- Planktonic and benthonic organisms
- Marine meteorology
- Hydro acoustic applications
- Trace metal pollution identification and distribution
Whether students want to develop a new way of restoring wetlands and shorelines, design solutions for managing the effects of pollution or solve the mystery of red tide, a master's in oceanography from Florida Tech provides expert training in some of the most diverse marine environments in the world.
Studying for a master's in oceanography at Florida Tech provides students five areas of specialization:
- Biological Oceanography – training with an emphasis on biological aspects including phytoplankton, zooplankton and coral reef technology.
- Chemical Oceanography – studying pollutants to help reverse manmade damage to oceans, as well as marine and environmental chemistry such as biomediation and elements integral for biological processes.
- Coastal Zone Management – protecting and managing shorelines through research on local and global cause and effect relationships of human activities in the development and use of environmental resources in the coastal zone.
- Geological Oceanography – discovering unknown topography of the deepest depths of the ocean through hands-on research on erosion control and coastal margins, marine particle composition and sea flour acoustics.
- Physical Oceanography – using advanced mathematics and engineering for quantitative analysis in research topics such as salinity, heat storage and density.

World Class Faculty
Students in the master's in oceanography program learn from experienced professors who bring a wealth of real-world knowledge to the classroom. The department head is a fellow in both the American Meteorological Society and Marine Technology Society, and others have completed fellowships at Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science and University of Miami. Florida Tech professors have extensive research backgrounds and are on the cutting-edge of their fields, including Kevin Johnson, ecology panel chair for the National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program.
With pollution and climate change affecting millions across the world, understanding its effect on ocean environments is integral to discovering solutions. For this reason, research by graduate students seeking a master's in oceanography is focused on deep-sea, coastal and estuarine environmental factors affected by pollution, climate change and natural processes.
High-tech ocean engineering and sciences laboratories provide facilities and instrumentation integral to oceanography research such as the measurement and analysis of water waves, saltwater corrosion and more. Students in the master's in oceanography program also have access to Florida Tech's Institute of Marine Research, Ralph S. Evinrude Marine Operations Center and the Vero Beach Marine Laboratory.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, oceanography and its related fields are fast growing, as jobs are expected to increase 11% through 2020. Many graduates of Florida Tech with a master's in oceanography have continued their research in a doctoral program, while others have secured employment with organizations such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Florida Department of Environmental Regulation or NASA.
