HUMAN-CENTERED DESIGN – M.S. AND Ph.D.
Human-centered design is about solving complex problems that deal with technology (modeling and simulation), organizations (complexity analysis, design and management) and people (cognitive engineering, life-critical systems). Graduates with an M.S. or Ph.D. in Human-Centered Design adopt the principals, methods and tools that support human-centered sustainable products and advance efficiencies, effectiveness and quality of life for everyone.
Interdisciplinary Approach to Design and Technology
The 21st century marketplace demands technology that is more accessible, user-friendly and informative. Florida Tech created The Human-Centered Design Institute (HCDi) to give engineers, designers, technology experts and creative thinkers an opportunity to combine their interdisciplinary backgrounds and solve complex technology problems while advancing the human-centered aspects of product and technology development.
HCDi works with the Colleges of Engineering, Science, Aeronautics, Science and Business to leverage this cross-disciplinary approach in design thinking, creativity, innovation and socio-technical leadership in order to tackle the challenges faced by product designers, manufacturers and businesses. The center brings together thought leaders to share ideas, best practices and advance the scope of knowledge through research and theoretical application.
Professors Dedicated To The Field
Florida Tech's faculty members are dedicated researchers who are actively involved in supporting their students' passion for discovery. Guy A. Boy, Ph.D., the director of the Human-Centered Design Institute and program chair for the master's and doctoral programs, has dedicated the majority of his life to advancing the field, expanding his students' and faculty's depth of knowledge and helping public and private organizations create advanced technologies.
Varied Research Programs
Florida Tech gives students extensive opportunities for research and field-study: it is at the core of every degree at the university and gives students real-world, hands-on experience. Research opportunities are as varied as the HCDi program's core disciplines. Life-critical human-computer interaction, cognitive ergonomics, tool and environment design in education, and cognitive engineering in power plant control and maintenance are just a few research topic examples.
As the human-centered design approach continues to be adopted by marketplace innovators, a greater demand is put on industry professionals who understand how to make technology more accessible, user-friendly and informative. Earning a master's or doctoral degree in the field helps propel graduate students from diverse backgrounds, including engineering, psychology and science, to become crucial contributors to their organizations' new technology creation and enhancement.
