Admission Requirements

The applicant to the Master of Science in Health Management program must have a bachelor's degree; however, the degree need not be in business administration. Students who are graduates from other fields are encouraged to apply. Students with an undergraduate business degree or courses may be able to waive the program prerequisite requirements based on an evaluation of their undergraduate academic transcripts. Prerequisite courses are required of a student whose undergraduate major is outside the business area or who has not previously completed the courses in these prerequisite areas. The exact number of needed prerequisite courses depends on courses completed during the student's undergraduate studies.

The GRE or GMAT may be required for admission. General admission requirements and the process for applying are discussed in the Academic Overview section. Individuals who do not meet the stated requirements for regular admission may petition to take graduate courses for credit as a continuing education applicant.

Degree Requirements

The degree is conferred on students who have successfully completed 33 semester credit hours of graduate coursework plus other course requirements as listed on the student's approved program plan. Students without an adequate undergraduate background will be required to complete all or part of the program prerequisites. Students may choose elective courses with the approval of their advisor.

Students with undergraduate credits for courses they believe are equivalent to the program prerequisites should consult with their advisor concerning waiver of those courses.

  • MTH 1701 College Algebra
    Credit Hours: 3
    Real-number system; arithmetic operations with polynomials, special products and factoring; linear, fractional and quadratic equations; inequalities, exponents, radicals and absolute values; functions and graphs; and complex numbers, logarithms, logarithmic and exponential functions. Credit can only be applied toward business, communication, humanities, management, psychology or computer information systems degrees at Florida Tech.

Note: Computer literacy is required as a prerequisite. It can be demonstrated by the applicant's undergraduate coursework, passing a proficiency examination offered by the extended studies department or by completing a suitable computer course.

  • MGT 5000 Financial Accounting
    Credit Hours: 3
    Studies accounting concepts, the accounting model, measurement processes, financial statements, financial analysis, the accounting cycle, monetary and fixed assets, inventory, current and long-term liabilities, and equity structures of partnerships, proprietorships and corporations.
  • MGT 5002 Corporate Finance
    Credit Hours: 3
    Covers concepts and tools of corporate financial management including corporate financial planning, forecasting, budgeting, quantitative techniques and practices. Considers the importance of ethics and the international aspects in financial decision-making.
  • MGT 5019 Marketing
    Credit Hours: 3
    Approaches the marketing function from the point of view of the marketing manager. Examines the role of marketing in the firm, the economy and society. Introduces marketing concepts and operational approaches for marketing decision-making. Employs the case method to apply theory to the development of a marketing mix.
  • MGT 5033 Human Resources Management
    Credit Hours: 3
    Explores issues surrounding the employment of human resources in various organizational settings using lectures/guided discussions and case studies. May include recruitment/selection, job analyses/evaluation, equal employment opportunity, training/development, compensation/benefits, appraisal, labor relations, health and safety, and separation/retirement.
  • MGT 5132 Basic Economics
    Credit Hours: 3
    Covers market forces of supply and demand, concept of utility, firm and production, production function and costs of production, and various market structures. Introduces macroeconomics, the issues of aggregation, circular flow model, monetary sector and the government stabilization policies.
  • MGT 5300 Healthcare Organizations
    Credit Hours: 3
    Covers the development of the U.S. healthcare system. Includes the origins of the trends that led to the current and future American healthcare system; role of the manager in design of the organization with respect to procedures, resources and feedback; professional integration; and interaction of management and other healthcare professionals.
  • MGT 5301 Healthcare Management
    Credit Hours: 3
    Includes the ethical, legal and technological setting for organizational theory and concepts; strategic planning and marketing in the hospital setting; management engineering applied to problem-solving and decision-making; motivation for resource output and control; and leadership, interpersonal and organizational communication.
  • MGT 5303 Healthcare Law
    Credit Hours: 3
    Covers legal aspects of healthcare including the interaction of the U.S. legal system with various forms of healthcare institutions, their structure and function. Includes the legal responsibilities of hospital executives at various levels, governing boards, administrative/medical staffs, and legal rights of patients, negligence and medical records.
  • MGT 5305 Healthcare Quality Management
    Credit Hours: 3
    Examines the systems that measure and maintain quality in healthcare. Includes how to improve the standards of care and hold the effectiveness and efficiency of care, and the functions and requirements of the new Total Quality Management discipline as it applies to healthcare.

    Credit Hours: 3
    Covers appreciation and general understanding of the mechanics and elements involved in the healthcare financial decision-making process. Includes understanding and interpreting healthcare financial statements, working knowledge of various reimbursement systems, and knowing and reacting to healthcare cost behavior.
  • MGT 5304 Healthcare Economics
    Credit Hours: 3
    Analyzes the costs and affordability of healthcare. Includes public perceptions, attitudes and political pressures affecting demand for health services, reimbursement policies shaping service delivery, competition and alternate delivery systems, managed care and other government/private payor efforts to control costs.
  • MGT 5310 Healthcare Nursing Management
    Credit Hours: 3
    Includes basic issues nursing professionals must handle. Also covers leadership, professional skills, personal issues, organizational behavior and development of peak performance psychology, management skills and career development.
  • MGT 5311 Healthcare Management Information Systems
    Credit Hours: 3
    Covers different types of management information systems for healthcare managers. Includes identification of appropriate systems for various tasks, compliance and goals accomplished using MIS, computer-assisted project management, managing organizational impacts and resistance, and maintaining security and privacy.
  • MGT 5312 Healthcare Marketing
    Credit Hours: 3
    Includes analysis, planning, implementation and control of programs within the healthcare institution designed to bring about voluntary exchanges of value between those entities and their target markets. Identifies HSO needs for marketing and fundraising.
