The Ph.D. in oceanography program at Florida Tech provides students five areas of specialization:
- Biological Oceanography – an emphasis on biological aspects including phytoplankton, zooplankton and coral reef technology.

- Geological Oceanography – discovery of unknown topography of the deepest depths of the ocean through hands-on research on erosion control and coastal margins, marine particle composition and sea flour acoustics.
