BS - Accounting

What is an Accounting Degree?

Whether you want to be a tax accountant, corporate auditor or certified public accountant (CPA), you can get there with an accounting degree from Florida Tech. Here, you'll develop a strong background in business and get hands-on experience in modern accounting strategies and best practices. The accounting degree program integrates strong accounting courses with real world experience, providing a solid business framework.

Our accounting degree program is dynamic and focused. You'll get started right away, taking core courses like Global Business Perspectives and Computer Applications for Business as a freshman. Guided by highly accomplished faculty who care about your success, you'll build the foundation you need to pursue an accounting-track MBA and/or take the CPA exam.

Advantages

Why Florida Tech:

  • Small classes and one-on-one contact with faculty mentors provides a unique, personalized experience
  • Hands-on experience through the Practicum in Business, an internship course for which you apply your knowledge within a dynamic local company
  • Countless internships available at local companies and organizations
  • Opportunity to gain experience through the Women's Business Center, the Center for Ethics and Leadership, and the Activity-Based Total Accountability Institute

Learning

Clubs and Organizations:

  • Delta Mu Delta, national business honor society
  • Society for the Advancement of Management (SAM)
  • International Business Club

Internships and Cooperative Learning:

All accounting degree majors complete the Practicum in Business during the second semester of their senior year. The practicum bridges the gap between classroom studies and the real world, easing the transition from business student to industry professional. Students are matched with a host organization of interest to them where they conduct a "live case analysis" of the organization, and:

  • gain insight into industries and areas of interest
  • get a "foot in the door" at top local companies
  • build a network of industry contacts and potential employers
Recent placements have included:
  • Brevard County Government
  • Clear Channel Outdoor
  • The Paxen Group, Inc.
  • State Farm
  • Merrill Lynch
  • Airewire.net, Inc.
  • The Bionetics Corp
  • Enterprise Rent-A-Car
  • Space Coast Credit Union
  • Health First, Inc.
  • Northrop Grumman
  • Kessel Real Estate

Future Outcomes

Outcomes - Grad School: After graduation, accounting degree students have an excellent background in the business and management fields and can directly enter the job market, in commerce, industry, government or other areas. Many students wish to continue into graduate school, to earn the credits required to sit for the CPA exam, or to pursue an MBA or law degree. In addition to continuing their studies at Florida Tech, recent graduates have attended:

  • University of Central Florida
  • George Mason University
  • Pennsylvania State University
  • Stetson Law School
  • University of Miami

Outcomes - Career and Salary: In 2009, the average starting salary for accounting degree B.S. graduates was $48,575 (Source: NACE National Association of Colleges and Employers).

The demand and salaries for accountants are excellent and accelerating. More job opportunities exist for Florida Tech accounting degree graduates than there are graduating seniors. Graduates go onto become certified public accountants, managerial accountants, tax accountants, and chief financial officers.
