BS - Middle Grades Math & Science

What is a Middle School Math and Science Education degree?

Teachers help shape our tomorrow and encourage the young minds of our future leaders. With more than 20,000 new teachers needed each y ear, demand is high - especially for skilled science and mathematics educators. Florida Tech education majors are highly qualified to meet this demand. Our rigorous close-knit program allows students to focus and gain knowledge beyond the basic requirements. Our students train in the field as well as in teh area's "A-rated" school district, and our graduates earn top teaching honors and enjoy a 100% success rate on certification exams and in securing teaching positions after graduation.

Internships and Cooperative Learning: Middle school science and mathematics education degree majors complete a full year of student teaching in their senior year. During the first semester of student teaching, students may choose either a traditional classroom setting or an informal education setting, such as a zoo or museum. Informal education opportunities abound on the Space Coast at facilities like the Brevard Zoo, The Living Seas at Walt Disney World's EPCOT Center and variety of local science camps. The second semester of student teaching is completed in a traditional setting at a public private, or charter secondary school. Florida Tech students teach within the "A-rated" Brevard County school district where there are more than 36 outstanding middle and high schools. The Brevard County School District has been rated number one in the state in the number of state science fair winners, number one in the state in student dual enrollment participation and number three in the nation in the percentage of National Board Certified teachers

Future Outcomes

Outcomes - Grad School: Our middle school science and mathematics education degree graduates teach throughout the nation and in Puerto Rico and Curacao. Many have won awards such as National Teacher of the Year, Regional Teacher of the Year and Teacher in Space Finalist. Our students have a 100% pass rate on all required Teacher Certification Exams and enjoy a 100% hire rate within the first year of graduation for those seeking teaching positions.

The recommended program plan is given below. Teacher certification areas may be Mathematics (6–12) or Middle Grades Mathematics (5–9). All applicants must meet the current entrance requirements for teacher-education programs established by the Florida Department of Education. Formal application is made during the sophomore year. Application procedures and requirements may be found in the department’s student handbook.

A full year of student teaching during the senior year provides the student with many experiences encountered in the teaching profession. To graduate from a teacher-education program approved by the Florida Department of Education, the student must complete all requirements established pursuant to Section 1004.04 F.S., which includes competencies and skills for teacher certification as prescribed in Rule 6A04.0021, F.A.C., as well as additional content and instructional practices listed in Sections 1004.04(2), (3) and (5), F.S. In addition, students must complete the coursework from an approved program plan with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, demonstrate competence in all 12 Florida Education Accomplished Practices, pass all of the Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (General Knowledge, Professional Education and Subject Area) and earn a minimum 3.0 grade point average for 18 credit hours of student teaching.

Teacher preparation programs in the state of Florida are required by Title II, section 207, of the Higher Education Act to make public their Institutional Report Cards. Florida Tech’s report card may be found online at www.fit.edu/education.
