Frequently Asked Questions

What is Telecom?

It is the name of the Telecommunication Department at Florida Tech. They are responsible for all telephone services on campus, including switchboard operations, voice mail operations, beeper services for university departments, and long distance telephone services.

Top

What is Long Distance Service?

Long Distance is calling to any location outside of the local calling area, including both domestic and international calling. All University department's long distance dialing and billing services are handled through the Telecom Department. Students are required to complete an application to receive long distance service. The Telecom Department will provide an authorization code to the user to be used from any University telephone extension to make long distance calls. The current Long Distance Provider for the University is Qwest Communications.

Top

What is the current cost for long distance services?

There is no connection, monthly or per call access cost charged under the Florida Tech Long Distance Service Plan. All domestic calls including Puerto Rico are 9 cents per minute. See Rate Information for international rates.

Top

Will I be able to make long distance calls?

Yes! Direct dial long distance is available to all campus students. You will receive dialing instructions with your Authorization Code.

Top

How are my calls kept separate from my roommate's calls?

You will be assigned a seven digit Authorization Code that allows you to make long distance calls from anywhere on campus. Your code is a unique number that is assigned only to you. All long distance calls will be charged to the authorization code.

Top

Can anyone else use my Authorization Code?

Only if you give it out-which we don't recommend! Since you are responsible for all calls made on your Authorization Code, you should treat it with all the security you would treat a credit card.

Top

Can I use my Authorization Code from any campus phone?

Yes. Your monthly invoice will reflect all calls placed using your Authorization Code, regardless of the physical location of the station from which the call was placed. So if you are in the Library and need to place a call you do not have to return to your room to do so.

Top

How do I pay for my long distance service?

You will receive an itemized statement each month for your review from the Telecommunications Office. Your charges will be automatically charged to your student account.

Top

Is the University-provided long distance service expensive?

The University offers a competitive rate. Only 9 cents per domestic minute. See rate information for international rates.

Top

But if I wish to use a telephone credit card, will I be able to?

Yes! It is possible to use calling cards issued by other long distance carriers. But keep in mind, while most long distance carriers advertise discounts on long distance calls, they also charge a "per call" fee that can range from $.80 to $3.00.

Top

Can I call home collect?

Yes, you may place collect calls from your room. Dialing 1-800-265-5328 is one option for collect calls.

Top

Will I have a telephone in my room when I arrive?

The university provides the line equipment that you will be sharing with your roommate. The University does not provide the telephone set. Most privately owned equipment is compatible with the University phone system.

Top

What if someone calls me collect? Can I accept the call?

You are not allowed to accept collect calls unless you have made special arrangements with the Telecommunications Office..

Unfortunately, if you do accept unauthorized collect calls, you will be charged for the call and you will also be assessed a $50.00 penalty fee.
