Admission Information for International Students

Admission Requirements for International Students

International applicants are encouraged to apply, and will be evaluated on the basis of the same criteria as all other students. SAT or ACT scores are not required, but strongly recommended. English language proficiency is not required for admission, but enrollment in academic courses will be limited for all whose native language is not English until proficiency can be demonstrated. It is very important that you sit for the TOEFL examination prior to arrival in order to assure registration into appropriate classes for your first semester.

The Demonstrating English Proficiency guidelines describe the ways in which English proficiency may be established, either in advance of enrollment or after arrival at Florida Tech, and presents the courses available to help establish proficiency.

Admission Criteria

Applicants to Florida Tech must demonstrate the readiness to succeed in a challenging academic curriculum. Secondary school performance is the most important element of the application. While no minimum average is specified, the student's performance must indicate a readiness for college studies in a chosen academic program. For most programs of study, a strong background in science and mathematics is required. Scholarship opportunities are based on the University’s formula for gpa recalculation.

Required Grades

Based on the American grading system, students should have an average of "B" or better.

Based on the British system, or one that models the British system, should have a minimum of five GCSE or IGCSE examinations with grade of C or better. (In CXC exams-grades of 1 or 2, Malaysian exams-grades 1-5). Students on a grading scale of 20 should have an average of 12 or more. Students on a grading scale of 10, 6 or more. Students whose system is on a grading scale of 100, the required average will vary, but a minimum of 65 percent is required.

Official transcripts are required for all students seeking admission to Florida Tech. The transcripts must come directly from your university or school, and carry the official seal of the institution. In the case where official transcripts cannot be sent, international applicants are permitted to send photocopies of the transcripts under the following conditions:

  • The photocopies are attested by a duly authorized official to be true copies of the original documents
  • Each page must carry the authorized seal of the official
  • All English translations must also be attested to be true translations of the transcript; and
  • Faxed and scanned transcripts will be acceptable for initial admission as long as originals are received by the student's arrival on campus.

Standardized Testing

SAT I

Considered, recommended, but not required for admission to the university.

SAT II

Considered, recommended, but not required for admission to the university.

TOEFL

If English is not the language spoken in your home, then this test is strongly recommended. If you cannot sit for the TOEFL in your country, you will be required to take the institutional TOEFL, an in-house English proficiency exam, at the beginning of your first semester at Florida Tech.

However, we strongly recommend you take the TOEFL exam prior to arrival to campus in order to assure registration into appropriate classes for your first semester.

Transfer Students

Undergraduate transfer credits may be awarded for courses taken at an international college or university that is recognized as being degree-granting by that country’s educational governing authority. The student may be required to contact the country’s educational governing authority requesting official documentation be mailed from the educational governing authority directly to Florida Tech’s Office of the Registrar.

A student requesting transfer credit for academic work completed at an international educational institution must request that official transcripts be mailed directly to the Florida Tech Office of Undergraduate Admission from all previously attended institutions showing all courses taken, dates and grades. A transcript is considered official only when each issuing institution mails the transcript directly to Florida Tech’s Office of Undergraduate Admission or Office of the Registrar. Official course descriptions and/or syllabi are also required. In the case of transcripts and course syllabi that are not in English, official English translations are required.

While Florida Tech makes every effort to complete the official certification of transfer credit prior to the student’s arrival, regional accreditation guidelines allow one semester in which to complete this process. Transfer credit criteria mentioned in the above section apply to transfer credit from international institutions.

A transfer student from any school in the United States must submit a Transfer Eligibility Statement completed by the international adviser at a student’s current school. The Transfer Eligibility Statement is required for transfer students in order to issue an I-20. The SEVIS release date must be stated on the form.

International applicants with less than twenty-four (24) semester hours of credit must submit the appropriate documentation of completion of secondary school from their home country. In most cases, twenty-four (24) semester hours equates to one complete year of study at a college or University.

Advanced Credit

Credit is awarded for grades of four or higher in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program for higher-level exams and certain standard-level exams for IB diploma holders. Based on a review of the subject areas and scores, credit is also awarded for receiving C or better for the British GCE examinations at the advanced level (A-level), or for the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE) when two units are completed.

Advanced Credit is granted for the International Baccalaureate program, as well as GCE "A" level examinations and American Advanced Placement (AP) tests. Upon your admission to the university, you will receive specific information concerning your entry position.

Applicants for Aviation majors with Flight Training must have in his or her possession an FAA medical certificate from an FAA approved medical examiner prior to the start of flight training at Florida Tech. You can locate an Aviation Medical Examiner in your area through the FAA website.
