How I spent my summer…

Derek Brown

Junior, Software Engineering

Fredericksburg, Va.

Here are some of the details about my summer job…

My specific title with ManTech was officially electronics technician, level 1. I worked with ManTech Security Technologies Corporation contracting for the Department of State. I did not work in network security, but my job was to install, operate, troubleshoot and train other users on new badging systems for embassies around the world. I traveled to Antananarivo, Madagascar; Maputo, Mozambique; and Tokyo, Japan. I worked with a great group of about 10 people.  Some were hired by the company that hired me, ManTech, and some were hired by the Department of State.

How will this contribute to my career…

Well, I received a security clearance. However, that is only golden icing on the cake of experience. The experience I had there in troubleshooting problems and designing solutions in the field (where the nearest computer store could be in another country) was challenging and quite rewarding. I will treasure the opportunity to get hands-on experience like that when I work for other companies.

Why to consider Florida Tech for software engineering...

Quite frankly, it is because the professors are amazing. I have had a wonderful time here learning, and the professors want to teach you the things that they have learned in the field. Their knowledge of both the academic world and the “real” world is astounding.

Here are some of the other activities I’m involved in too…

• Association for Computing Machinery – general member

• Bowling Club – general member

• College Players – general member

• College Players intramural softball team – coach and player

• College Players float construction

• College Players one-act play “Psychopath:  Murder on the Run” – lead actor

• College Republicans – founding member

• Crimson – staff writer

• Phi Eta Sigma – member

• WCRR – radio show host

I also work several hours a week at the Gleason Performing Arts Center here on campus.
