How I spent my summer…

During the summer of 2005, I had a chance to work at a start-up, all professional class airline in Las Vegas, Nev. I found out about Primaris Airlines through their Web site and from talking to a friend who is studying aviation management at Florida Tech. We both started writing to the company, applying for an internship position, and both got accepted to work there for the summer. The company has been in operation for slightly over a year, so it is still in the process of cultivating funds from investors around the world. It is now operating a Boeing 757 as a contract charter airplane. But, once funding is received and the manufacturer releases the airplanes, the company will purchase all new 737 and 787 Dreamliners.

Due to the company being at its developing stage, and even though I was assigned to work in the maintenance department, it was easy for me to move around within the company and experience the true variety of what makes an airline flourish. My tasks ranged from putting together schedules for maintenance, helping out with troubleshooting maintenance problems, putting together pilot manuals and editing PowerPoint presentations. I was also involved in conducting a price analysis on avionic components while giving input on the Asian market to the marketing department and working at the front desk. I also helped out with flight attendant training. One project that was very exciting for me was to help put together the proposals for Boeing’s Large Cargo Freight (LCF) program. On the proposal date, there were ten representatives who work for the LCF program, and I had a chance to talk with them and find out more about the company from the perspective of an employee. This motivated me to become more passionate about what I am studying and strive to do even better in my studies.

The whole experience I received throughout the summer was beyond amazing. Not only did I have the opportunity to work for a great company with amazing people, I got to enjoy a city that is full of life. Las Vegas is the city that has so much to offer to both tourists and local residents. I must say there was never a dull moment. Even though I was working the entire time, it felt as if I was still having a summer vacation.

Thanks to the cooperative program at Florida Tech for one of the most memorable summers of my life. Because of this program, I had a chance to go out in the real world and practice what I have learned in class, network with people in my field, meet new people from different backgrounds who are great resources for advice and live the life in the city that never sleeps.
