How I spent my summer…

Adam Linsenbardt

Senior, Aerospace Engineering and Applied Mathematics

Baltimore, MD

I am a senior at Florida Tech studying Aerospace Engineering and Applied Mathematics. I spent most of this summer in Melbourne, Fla. working on research with a professor of aerospace engineering and working at Lockheed Martin in Titusville, Fla.

At the end of the semester last year, I was given the opportunity to work with a professor on a research project as an undergraduate over the summer. For the most part, I have spent my time performing simulations using a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) program called FLUENT (a computer program that simulates different conditions, for example a rotating tank with water in it) to model the behavior of liquid propellants in rotating fuel tanks aboard spacecraft. We are working with NASA on this project, and it is directly related to current missions using expendable launch vehicles. NASA is working on this research to support the GOES (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites) weather satellite missions, and we are attempting to describe the behavior of the propellants in a general manner. I have gained experience that will be valuable when I continue my education at the graduate level. Now that the fall semester has begun, my professor is allowing me to continue with the research for credit.

I also began working at Lockheed Martin this summer as an intern. The office mostly works with ground systems and facilities for various aerospace vehicles. I have had the opportunity to work with many different people on various projects and have learned a lot from the experience. I am continuing this internship part time during my senior year and hope to continue there while I work on my master’s degree.

The experiences I have had while a student at Florida Tech have been invaluable to me. I have been given many opportunities to learn outside of the classroom and work as part of a team that have helped to prepare me for both of these experiences this summer and will be very helpful when I begin working full time.
