How to Save Microsoft Word Files in Rich Text Format (RTF)

1. From the File menu select Save As

File Menue

2. In the Save As window, click the down-arrow located to the right of the "Save as type" option already selected, this may read as "Word Document (*.doc)"

Save As .rft

3. Scroll down and select the option "Rich Text Format (*.rtf)"

4. Type a "File name" for your document, if necessary. When naming your file, use all lowercase letters without any spaces or special characters (i.e. - @ # $ or %). For example, project1.rtf is an acceptable filename, while Project #1.RTF is not.

5. Click the Save button.

Your document will now have the extension .rtf instead of .doc.
