Although Florida Tech is less than
40 years old, it has a rich history with many fascinating links to
the development of Brevard County and our nation's space program.
We hope that this historic walking tour provides you with the opportunity
to enjoy our beautiful campus and learn more about some of the interesting
events that have contributed to building our university.
Florida Tech grew out of America's
space program. In the early 1950s, East Central Florida underwent
a transformation. The fishing communities along this stretch of the
Atlantic Coast began to receive an influx of engineers, scientists,
and technicians. However, there was no opportunity for advanced study
nearby. In 1958, Brevard Engineering Institute was launched, and
soon it became Brevard Engineering College. In 1966, the university
was issued a charter by the State of Florida as Florida Institute
of Technology.
