Located
in Florida Tech's Botanical Garden is Melbourne's first public school
house, built in 1883. Its two teachers served children of the earliest
families living in the Melbourne area. The school term was only about
five months during the summer. A hand-operated pump for water stood
outside the door and inside long benches served as seats and desks
for the students who wrote on slates.
