Florida Tech SafeCOVID-19 News and Notices
President's Message: May 14, 2021
Dear Florida Tech community,
Summer is here, and even though some may think of this as a slower time in higher education, we at Florida Tech are busy teaching summer courses, conducting research, and preparing for the fall semester. While we are cautiously optimistic that the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic is behind us, we continue our efforts to foster a healthy and safe campus environment.
This week, we know of no new cases of COVID-19 among our students and one new case among our faculty and staff. Safety protocols are in place and we wish this affected individual a swift return to full health.
I want to use this time to share some other news with you as well. As you may recall, Florida Tech made the difficult decisions to close the Foosaner Art Museum and the Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts. The Foosaner property in downtown Eau Gallie has been sold and the Funk Center is being transformed into an esports arena for our students. We are finalizing careful preparations to transfer the collections to another museum where they can be enjoyed for years to come.
For at least a decade, Florida Tech sought community support to help sustain these important initiatives but it never materialized. Further, the people that this university exists to serve first—our students—were left to subsidize these initiatives through their tuition dollars. While it is incredibly disappointing that a community audience never emerged to provide regular funding for the museums, I am gratified that we can now commit those scarce dollars to future projects that more directly benefit our students, support their educational aspirations, and advance our core educational mission.
Meanwhile, please remember…face coverings, hand sanitization, and appropriate social distancing remain essential tools in the fight against COVID-19.
Talk again soon.
