Florida Tech Student Chapter of the American Meteorological Society

We are the weather club on campus! Registered as a student chapter of the American Meteorological Society, "a global community committed to advancing weather, water, and climate science and service," we are an academic organization. Our goal is to educate the community about weather through briefings, discussions, and other activities while providing educational and career opportunities to prepare members for a successful future in meteorology. We take enriching trips to the National Weather Service, National Hurricane Center, national AMS conference, and other locations tying to the field. We also regularly connect with scientific and meteorological professionals, including our very own alumni.

Donations directly support club activities including a weather balloon launch, purchasing equipment for our newly founded broadcast media branch Panther Weather Service, and sending students to the national AMS conference at the beginning of the spring semester. This year the conference is to be held in Baltimore, Maryland. Many students are near graduation and hoping to present research done at Florida Tech and through internships as well as network and expand their meteorological knowledge.

Panther Weather Service:

Panther Weather Service (PWS) is a new sub-organization of Florida Tech AMS. PWS is tied with Florida Tech’s Panther Media Group and serves as a broadcasting media for weather forecasts. Our  “Lead Forecasters” have worked with interested students to compile forecasts to share with viewers each week. PWS gives members a chance to gain experience with broadcast meteorology, public speaking, graphic design, and many other useful skills. Last year forecasts were done through Zoom and posted to social media, but PWS is quickly expanding and already has its own official studio. Although still actively growing, PWS has a bright future ahead with a current timeline to shift all forecasts to the studio using professional software and equipment.

Featured testimonials:

“I’ve learned of many different meteorology career paths and opportunities that I never would have known existed by attending Florida Tech AMS meetings. Sharing a common interest in the weather has allowed me to make many friends and connections with those in the field, and the various meetings and activities are something I always look forward to each semester. My experience at school wouldn’t have been the same without this group.” - Gabriel Taylor, 2024, President, Panther Weather Service lead forecaster

“Florida Tech AMS exposes members to opportunities perfect for aspiring meteorologists and weather fanatics. It has played a key role in connecting me with current students and professionals in my field of interest. Some of my favorite activities include the trip to Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, weather briefings, and hosting speakers. I appreciate all the support in excitement for events this year including a weather balloon launch on campus, events featuring alumni and the Space Coast AMS chapter, the official launch of Panther Weather Service, and sending students to the AMS national conference.” -Kelly Carmer 2023, Alumni

“My experience being part of Florida Tech AMS has been incredible. Not only have I met lifelong friends through this group, but I’ve been able to learn more about myself and what impact I can have on the field of meteorology. This club has exposed me to various career options by giving me up-close looks into the work life of a meteorologist. Attending the 21st Annual AMS Student Conference on behalf of Florida Tech in Houston last year was an awesome experience as I was surrounded by others who have the same interest as me- weather! I will forever be grateful I was a part of AMS and given so many opportunities to grow as a leader.” -Akarshna Iyer 2023, Alumni

“Florida Tech AMS has given me a way to shape my career interests and get advice from alumni that have been in my exact situation and helped me to prepare for my future in graduate school and operational meteorology.” -Zachary Watson 2023, Alumni

“Florida Tech AMS has allowed me to expand my life-long interest in meteorology. I have learned much useful information from the alumni guest speakers and fellow students. The club and alumni have allowed me to explore potential career paths. Being an officer has allowed me to help run a club, which has allowed me to take on a leadership role, which will be useful later in life. I will always be grateful that was a member and an officer of the Florida Tech AMS.”- Seth Lee, 2025, Vice President
