6.10 Short-Term Disability Insurance

The university provides Short-Term Disability (STD) Insurance at no cost to all benefit eligible employees. This coverage provides 66 2/3 percent of your base compensation, to a maximum of $2,000 per week, should you become disabled. STD Payments will not begin until after a fourteen (14) calendar day waiting period. This waiting period may be covered by sick, vacation, or any other leave the employee has accrued and available. STD Coverage continues for eleven (11) weeks, and converts to Long-Term Disability if the employee is still not able to return to work. The waiting period is included in the maximum STD period of eleven (11) weeks. Sick, vacation, or any other leave must be used to supplement STD payments to a maximum of 100 percent of your normal base pay, unless you are working during the disability period.

Employees must apply for STD benefits; coverage is not automatic. You, a family member, or supervisor should contact the Benefits Section of the Office of Human Resources for claim forms at the time of need by calling (321) 674-8100.
