Jim has grown businesses and commercialized several technologies in venture capital and corporate environments. As an executive and board director, he played roles in corporate governance, created and successfully implemented growth strategies for multiple energy service companies.  

He led Prometheus Energy to become one of North America’s largest and fastest growing suppliers of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the industrial sector. Jim is currently the Chief Operating Officer and Board Director for Stabilis Energy, LLC, a market leader in LNG production and distribution services in North America.

 

How did Florida Tech help prepare you for your career? 

FIT provided me a solid technical foundation for future professional growth and a methodology for critical thinking and problem solving. 

What advice or words of wisdom do you have for students and recent graduates?  

Stay confident, take initiative, be tenacious and never refuse an opportunity to learn more and take on more responsibility, even when it stretches you beyond your known capacity.

What was your most memorable experience at Florida Tech? 

There were many, it’s hard to say as many fun memories and others I appreciated much more after they were over.

What accomplishments are you most proud of?  

In my career. I was asked by one of  the largest international energy company to build a high tech energy services company. The mission was to take intellectual property developed in their research department, lead a team to engineer a sophisticated platform of data acquisition products and services, commercialize it in the marketplace which led to a successful company sale.

What was the most difficult challenge or failure that you had to overcome in your career? 

I think the most difficult challenge was balancing completion of my education with taking care of family and having a full time career!  I had tremendous support from my spouse, family and mentors at work.  

If you were contacted by a student or recent graduate—what could you offer them?  

Any advice, support or a job if I had the opportunity and need given the right degree.

Tino Alavie, PhD, can’t help but create his own business ventures. He has been directly or indirectly responsible for creating, managing, and growing seven technology start-ups in North America and Europe from start to financial exit.

Currently, as president and chief executive officer of Qvella Corporation, Dr. Alavie is the driving force behind the innovative research being conducted by the company. Qvella’s mission is to improve septic patient outcomes and save lives. “The confluence of emerging and disruptive technologies presents incredible opportunities for improvement in the delivery and management of healthcare that will ultimately benefit patients, providers, and payers. It is my hope and aspiration to continue the development of technologies and products that help transform human health,” he explains.

Tino is a seminar leader and guest lecturer with the faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto. He has been awarded fourteen patents with an additional six pending. Widely published with over fifty articles in journals and conference papers, Dr. Alavie received his bachelor’s degree (1986), master’s degree (1988), and doctoral degree (1992) from Florida Tech in electrical engineering. He also holds a post-doctorate in fiber optics sensing from the University of Toronto. He was recently awarded Florida Tech’s College of Engineering Outstanding Alumnus Award for 2013.

There is a lot in the cloud—just ask Dr. Steven Atkin, chief technology officer and distinguished engineer at IBM. Steven has been working on globalization issues at IBM for over twenty years. He serves to address the challenges developers encounter in their work transitioning to the cloud. In his current role, he is focused on the overall client experience and enabling clients to obtain the skills needed to fully utilize IBM cloud-based products.

Deborah was a woman driven to succeed. Her childhood love of math and science led her to Florida Tech where she put her passions to good use. It wasn’t until her second year that she realized her interest in engineering. She earned her bachelor of science in ocean engineering in 1974. After graduation, Deb returned home to New Jersey and landed her first job as a civil engineer. From there, her career only blossomed.

Teachers can have a profound impact on the lives of young people, and the best teachers are those who care deeply and work hard to truly engage students. Tracey Bailey has spent years striving to improve public education. He also served as board member for the Florida Tech Alumni Association in 1994. For Tracey, improving public education requires accountability and a drive for higher student achievement. In 1993, he was recognized as the National Teacher of the Year for the entire United States because of his dedication to improving education for both students and educators. He was selected for this honor out of 2.7 million teachers nationwide.

King was one of thirteen initial members of the first full-time class to attend Brevard Engineering College, now Florida Tech. He became the first Student Congress President, formed the BEC Student Chapter of the American Institute of Physics and was a charter member of the BEC chapter of Blue Key, a national honor fraternity. King received an associate of science in electrical engineering in 1964 and earned a bachelor of science in physics in 1966. While taking graduate classes at Florida Tech during 1966 and 1967, he taught undergraduate classes in Thermodynamics and Theory of Powered Flight. During Homecoming 2011, King was awarded the Florida Institute of Technology Pioneer Award for leading the way for all of the Florida Tech students who would follow in his footsteps.

Dallas Bienhoff is currently the Space Systems Architect at Off-World, Inc. where he is responsible for ensuring their space concepts have commonality, are synergistic and modular, whether they are surface or free-flying systems. He also leads their cislunar transportation development efforts. Mr. Bienhoff also leads the Moon Village Association’s Lunar Economics and Commercial Working Group’s Earth to Moon Transportation Market Team and is co-chair for the AIAA Cislunar Ecosystem Task Force’s Enterprise Architecture Working Group.

Prior to joining OffWorld, Dallas founded Cislunar Space Development Company, where he defined and promoted a reusable space-based cislunar transportation architecture. CSDC’s architecture included space tugs to move payloads from LEO to GTO, GEO and EML1 destinations, a Moon shuttle, and water to LOx/LH propellant depots in LEO and at EML1.

Mr. Bienhoff retired from Boeing as their Space Architect and In-Space and Surface Systems Manager responsible for capturing civil and commercial Space development and science mission spacecraft projects. In that role, he focused on new business opportunities in support of NASA Human Exploration Missions, the entrepreneurial space community and JPL science missions.

Dallas also worked for Rockwell International, The Aerospace Corporation, Rocketdyne, and Martin Marietta. Over the years, he led contract and IRAD studies on Cryogenic Propellant Storage and Transfer Technology Demonstration Mission Concepts, Minimum Functionality (lunar) Habitation Element, reusable cislunar transportation architecture, propellant depots, space solar power, exploration architectures, and launch system trade studies. Mr. Bienhoff was also a contributor to the National Security Space Office’s Space-Based Solar Power Study in 2007. During his career, Dallas led Rockwell’s X-33 SSTO and X-38 Crew Return Vehicle technical proposals, was co-lead with NASA for the ISS FGB element, led and participated in several space transportation and exploration architecture studies, oversaw Vandenberg Air Force Base Shuttle facilities development, evaluated propulsion system concepts and their failures, was a design and test engineer on the Space Shuttle Main Engine Development Program, and designed changes to the Titan III C payload interface.

Mr. Bienhoff holds a Master of Science – Engineering from California State University – Northridge (1985) and graduated from Florida Institute of Technology in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science – Mechanical Engineering.

Tom didn’t just receive an education at Florida Tech, he received life lessons that helped him become who he is today. Bohrer graduated from Florida Tech in 1986 with a bachelor of science in environmental science. His path to rowing was accidental. During orientation at Florida Tech, he stopped at the first table he approached. It was the rowing table. Destined or not, Tom felt the impact of rowing almost immediately. The more discernable his results, the more he was driven to improve. He went on to row for the U.S. Olympic team in the 1988 and 1992 Olympics, winning silver medals in the men’s fours both times.

Karen Britton, former White House chief information officer (CIO) and special assistant to President Barack Obama, leads strategy development and execution of LMI's corporate communications with a focus on its digital presence. She oversees a team responsible for online platforms, marketing and branding, external relations, and corporate citizenship.  

Previously serving as LMI’s vice president of digital services, Karen directed the delivery of enterprise-wide IT solutions to federal customers. Before joining LMI, she served as chief operating officer of woman-owned IT solutions provider e‑Management and helped expand its federal market practice.  

Karen joined the Office of Administration, Executive Office of the President, as deputy CIO in July 2009; she served as special assistant to the president and CIO from December 2012 to December 2014. During her White House tenure, she spearheaded innovative ways to deliver the president’s message to the American people. She also supported his cybersecurity agenda, protecting the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of unclassified information systems.

Beginning her career as a general engineer with the Submarine Maintenance Engineering, Planning, and Procurement Activity at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Karen subsequently joined the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters. She held positions of increasing responsibility, culminating as deputy command information officer directing command-wide IT planning, policy, and budget. She left the Department of the Navy in 2007 to support capital planning implementation and enterprise architecture plan development for the Department of Energy.

Karen received her bachelor’s in industrial engineering and operations research from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and her master’s in management from the Florida Institute of Technology. She is a graduate of the Defense Systems Management College and the Excellence in Government Fellows Program. Karen has received distinguished honors, including the Partnership for Public Service Leadership in Action Awards, the National Women of Color in Technology Awards, and the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award.

Joe started as the lead engineer for recovery and landing operations, and he is now manager of offshore and landing operations engineering. Recovery, refurbishment, and reuse of orbital rocket boosters are critical to SpaceX’s goal of reducing the cost of access to space and ultimately enabling humans to live on other planets.

Ken Capp’s career with Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) began in 1981.  At that time, getting power in your home in Southern Maryland was not taken for granted as it is today.

Through these years, Ken worked to support many different facets of the electric distribution system including commercial service design and residential subdivision design.  He quickly moved into computer based electric system modeling and power line carrier communications for load management.  Ken advanced into management of work in distribution, transmission, substation and solar systems.  He also was responsible for the construction and operations of various communications systems including SCADA, fiber and microwave communication networks, and most recently the full deployment of the two-way automated metering infrastructure (AMI).  Ken has been managing the Engineering & Operations Department since 2003.

Ken’s career at SMECO culminated in his serving now as the Sr. Vice President – Engineering & Operations, and Chief Operating Officer. In this role, he is responsible for the engineering, operations, construction, and maintenance of SMECO’s transmission and distribution plant.  He is also a key member of the team which manages SMECO’s wholesale power portfolio.  Ken is a past member of the ReliabilityFirst Board of Directors and past chairman.  His tenure with ReliabilityFirst began in December of 2005 and ended in November of 2019.  Ken also served on the Board of the St. Mary’s Nursing and Rehabilitation center from 2006 through 2016.  He currently serves as co-Chair of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Technical Advisory Committee to the Power Plant Research Program.

How did Florida Tech help prepare you for your career?

“Florida Tech delivered to me an abundant understanding of complex math, physics and economics that enabled my development in the electric power industry.”

What advice or words of wisdom do you have for students and recent graduates?

“Never be deterred by those things that are not understood at the first glance.  Ask yourself questions and find answers or apply potential solutions until issues are resolved.  And never forecast failure.  Instead take actions to mitigate the risks that are identified in pursuit of success!”

What was your most memorable experience at Florida Tech?

“Viewing the cobalt source in the underwater storage facility next to the engineering building.”

What was the most difficult challenge or failure that you had to overcome in your career?

“I needed to overcome self-righteous indignation in order to successfully lead others in our evolving business.”

If you were contacted by a student or recent graduate—what could you offer them?

Confidence.  Everyone should have the understanding that as long as you are willing to take the time to explore those things that are not understood at first, and seek solutions to each question of the unknown, and understanding will develop with time and effort.  Otherwise known as work.

Raymond Carlsen was born in the southern Norwegian city of Larvic in 1955. His father served in the Army and Raymond grew up in a military camp near Elverum, Norway. As a kid, Raymond played football, competed in track & field, and was an avid cross-country skier. He started at the University of Stavanger with a major in ‘oil and gas engineering’, but after the 1977 Bravo blowout, the largest oil spill in the North Sea at the time, he switched his studies to environmental engineering and attended Florida Tech. Here he first “dabbled” in solar power in 1980 and witnessed the live launch of the space shuttle Columbia on April 12^th, 1981.

After graduating, Raymond returned to his home country of Norway, eager to uncover his next opportunity to influence. He took a chance on oil and gas, “the cleaner side” of the business he explains, starting what would evolve into a 20+ year career in the industry by making sure that the produced water was pure enough to be put back in the ocean.

The oil and gas industry would eventually lead him to Kværner in 1989, where he was a part of building up this industrial process engineering and construction newcomer – eventually helping it expand internationally. He once again seized opportunities that life presented and moved his family to Southeast Asia for the company. Raymond is quick to credit his wife and kids for their support and strength as they adventured with him around the world over the years, transforming them into the family of global citizens they are today.

Even with his family as his firm foundation, Raymond found himself in an unprecedented situation while working for Kværner in Malaysia – one in which attaining success didn’t follow Raymond’s typical formula.

“Up until the point I moved to Kuala Lumpur, I’d considered myself fairly successful. But my usual methods for success did not work in this environment, and it humbled me.”

He may not have known it at the time, but this struggle to adapt was an essential lesson for the leader Raymond would become. After Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta, he would move on to Singapore, and later, as part of the Aker Group, he relocated to Houston to head Aker Subsea. He left Aker in 2009, with his sights set on a new adventure. He was ready to build something again, he says, something closer to his environmental roots. And that’s when he got the call from a nascent solar start-up called Scatec.

“I came in as CEO and we hit the ground running. I saw before me a sea of opportunities across the solar value chain, from development, to construction, to selling power. We started off small, but things changed quickly.”

Early on, Raymond targeted the world outside of Norway for his burgeoning solar business. South Africa was one of the company’s first opportunities beyond Europe, and when it came time, Raymond ended up being the only willing executive to make the move, knowing how important cultural understanding was to their eventual success.

Raymond calls Cape Town “the best place I’ve ever lived”. He was there for three years, building and delivering, leading the growing, global company a continent away, eventually taking it public in 2014.

With Raymond at the helm for the past 13 years, the Scatec team has expanded to 622 employees representing around 51 different nationalities, with operations in 26 countries. The company has grown beyond its solar roots and is stretching its ambitions across the renewable power portfolio. Raymond’s team has read the horizon well and is meeting the renewables revolution head on with targeted moves into hydropower and green ammonia.

It comes down to seizing the opportunities to influence – to be in lead, take the risks and see what’s possible. “I never did understand the companies who said they wanted to be a close second,” Raymond says.

 

How did Florida Tech help prepare you for your career? 

I was exposed to students from all around the world and that helped me to prepare for the international career I later embarked on.

 

What advice or words of wisdom do you have for students and recent graduates?  

Every decision you make is an opportunity to influence. Always take initiative and see how you can assist in creating a better solution for all involved.

 

What was your most memorable experience at Florida Tech? 

The social gatherings after the soccer matches at the campus.

 

Who was your favorite faculty member (or other mentors or role models)?

Dr. Jennings. A great mentor for me being a foreign student

 

What accomplishments are you most proud of?  

Having lived on four continents and established many companies. Most lately Scatec that is a leading renewable company within solar, wind, hydropower, batteries and green hydrogen/ammonia

 

If you were contacted by a student or recent graduate—what could you offer them? 

I will be happy to provide advice to their professional careers if a foreign assignment is of interest

For most people, the thought of living off $100 for an entire year sounds impossible, but for Joe, this was his reality when he arrived on campus in 1969 with $100 in his pocket. Learning to budget and make ends meet provided a valuable lesson that he has applied throughout his career.

Shawn Davis Ph.D. is the CEO of Liberate Bio, where he aims to achieve the extraordinary—delivering genetic medicines that transcend liver-based limitations, liberating patients from disease.  Genetic medicines are poised to change the course of medicine, but their full potential can only be realized when delivered by vehicles that target these complex modalities to the appropriate cells.  Dr. Davis and the Liberate Bio team will deliver on this promise using generative artificial intelligence and machine learning trained on high-quality, in vivo data to accelerate every aspect of creating novel, extrahepatic vehicles. 

Dr. Davis has an extensive background in drug delivery, diagnostics, and biopharmaceutical development across startups and Fortune 500 pharmaceutical companies.  He joined Liberate Bio from AstraZeneca, where he was the Head of Drug Delivery for R&D Biopharmaceutical Development.  At AstraZeneca, he led the research and development of intracellular delivery of nucleic acids, controlled release of antibodies for less frequent dosing, and novel routes of administration for therapeutic benefit.  Before AstraZeneca, he held multiple roles of increasing responsibility at Amgen, focusing on combination product development, technology strategy, and innovation.  More broadly, he has provided thought leadership across the industry as a frequent speaker, chair of multiple conferences, and Subcutaneous Drug Development & Delivery Consortium board member.

 

How did Florida Tech help prepare you for your career? 

Florida Tech was critical in developing my learning process and providing motivation to push beyond any expectations others had for me. As a first-generation college student, my family didn’t fully appreciate or know how to support my desire to continue my education beyond high school. Florida Tech provided the environment and financial assistance required to make that possible. Under the mentorship of the Chemical Engineering department, specifically Dr. Manolis Tomodakis, I saw what was possible when I applied myself to the task at hand and realized I could create the future I wanted.

What advice or words of wisdom do you have for students and recent graduates?  

It’s normal not to know what you want to do with your life, particularly when entering or finishing college.  Life is generally about learning new things about the world and yourself.  Give yourself the freedom to explore and discover topics that motivate you to learn more.  If you’re excited about a topic, you’ll perform at your best and have the motivation to continue a life-long learning journey.

What was your most memorable experience at Florida Tech? 

Although I learned a lot in my classes, my participation in the student chapter of AIChE was most memorable.  When I saw senior students leading the organization, it was hard to picture myself being on their level. Within a year or two, I realized that I could be a leader if I just stepped forward and put the effort in. The trips we took together as a chapter taught me a lot about my friends, myself, and the future careers of Chemical Engineers.

Who was your favorite faculty member (or other mentors or role models?)

I’ve already mentioned Dr. Manolis Tomodakis as a key figure in my time at Florida Tech.  Dr. Tomodakis was a new faculty member the same year I was a Freshman.  So we were both new to the school and finding our way.  He provided mentorship, friendship, and an inspirational education.

What accomplishments are you most proud of?  

I’ve already accomplished far more in my career than I thought possible.  As the CEO of a small biotech, I’m excited about the many challenges I’ll take on each day.  The idea that I can have this much fun while also finding a path to deliver new medicines to patients and ease their illness is more than I could have hoped for.

What was the most difficult challenge or failure that you had to overcome in your career? 

If you frame your life as a series of experiments and discoveries, it’s much harder to call an experience a failure.  There are so many ways not to succeed that have nothing to do with factors I can control.  If I’ve focused on delivering everything in my power and the result isn’t what I wanted, I chalk it up to an educational experience.  Examples include a host of schools I didn’t get into, fellowships I didn’t receive, jobs I didn’t get, and ideas I thought were valuable but couldn’t get the support I needed to deliver on.  So I suppose if someone counts those as “failures,” then I wouldn’t be able to count them all!  On the other hand, If I didn’t put in the necessary effort and the results weren’t what I wanted, it was a failure in my mind.  I’m not sure I can remember one of those.

If you were contacted by a student or recent graduate—what could you offer them?  

I mentor many students at Florida Tech and other universities and early-career scientists.  I generally offer to listen.  Once I’ve heard them out and we talk about challenges they face or elements of uncertainty, I try to provide them with ways to think about the situation and to understand how they can take the next step forward.  Sometimes, life is as simple as deciding what you want and figuring out the next tiny step you can take to move yourself in that direction.  Nobody knows the correct answers, but I can help them understand how to think about it and discover the answers for themselves.

If you could make one book recommendation that changed your life, what is it?

“Thinking Fast and Slow” by Daniel Kahneman taught me so much about how I and others make poor decisions.  When I wanted to shift from a purely rational technical expert to a strategic leader, this book helped me see the path and informed many of my actions.

 

 

 

Through an active public speaking schedule and community leadership, Duane is changing public perception about the value of ocean and coastal research and conservation. His numerous public presentations and workshops have a central message: “Our oceans and coasts are an engine that drives the economy and quality of life for both Florida and the nation. I’m at home on the water and want to ensure that it continues to sustain lives to come.”

Dr. De Freese was featured in Florida Tech’s 60^th Anniversary special edition book, “60 for 60: Celebrating Sixty Years of Alumni at Florida Institute of Technology.”

Dale Dettmer obtained his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University in 1967 and Florida Institute of Technology in 1971, respectively; and a Juris Doctorate with honors from the University of Florida in 1973. Additionally, he is a member of the University of Florida Law Review.  

Dettmer is a member of the Florida Bar and the Brevard County Bar Associations, the Tax Section and the Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Section of the Florida Bar. Additionally, he is admitted to practice in the United States District Court, Middle District of Florida, and the United States Tax Court. His practices are focused on business law, real estate, and estate planning. Mr.Dettmer is “AV” rated by Martindale Hubbell, which is the highest rating for legal ability and ethics, and board-certified taxation by the Florida Bar Board of Legal Specialization and Education. 

Dale is past Chairman and a member of the Board of Trustees of Florida Institute of Technology. He also served as chair of the board of Health First Foundation Inc. and the Community Foundation of Brevard Inc. He was a member of the board of directors of BankFirst and The BankShares, and served as president and member of the board of directors of the Melbourne Kidney Center Inc.  

Dale is married to Pamela Joan Dettmer and has three children.  

His giving to Florida Tech includes the establishment of the Detmer Family Scholarship Fund and annual sponsorship for the Evening of Hope in support of the Scott Center for Autism. 

 

 

How did Florida Tech help prepare you for your career? 

A STEM education at Florida Tech teaches problem-solving skills by breaking down complex issues into a series of simple steps leading to real solutions. 

What advice or words of wisdom do you have for students and recent graduates?  

Master your studies as you progress as a solid academic base serves one well in divergent applications that will certainly be encountered.

Who was your favorite faculty member? 

Dr. Harry Weber.

What was your most memorable experience at Florida Tech? 

Attending the Olin Foundation press conference announcing its $50 million gift as “out of all of the schools in the country that were considered, Florida Tech is best positioned to maximize its potential with this gift”  (Not really a quote but it is as I remember it).

What accomplishments are you most proud of?  

Becoming the first alum to serve as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Florida Tech.

What was the most difficult challenge or failure that you had to overcome in your career? 

Upon deciding that I did not wish to pursue a career as an electrical engineer, I changed course and attended law school.  For me, the practice of law is not work, it’s fun.  The decision was not easy as there was no promise that a legal career would result in happiness – but it did.

Chart your own course and be ready to adjust as time goes by.

How do you view the future of Florida Tech?  

The future of Florida Tech is very bright as it continues to focus on excellence in STEM education.  This results in jobs for our graduates and builds a strong America.

 

Mary (Cathy) Dickens retired after a 37 year career as a civilian manager with the U.S. Army and joined COLSA in July 2015.  Prior to departing Civil Service, Ms. Dickens was the Deputy to the Commanding General, US Army Aviation and Missile Command (AMCOM), Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. In this position, she managed a multifaceted and diverse organization with an annual budget of over $18 Billion and a global workforce of over 9,000 military and civilian employees.

Prior to that position, she served as the Principal Assistant Responsible for Contracting and Executive Director of ACC-Redstone managing and directing an acquisition program consisting of contract awards of $25 Billion annually and active contracts of $110 Billion.

As Senior Vice President of Business Management Operations at COLSA Corporation, Ms. Dickens is responsible for providing executive leadership and oversight in the financial, human resources, contracting, subcontracting, proposal and pricing functions. Her organization provides business services across all programs and geographical locations. Ms. Dickens serves in a key role in providing financial stewardship and overall compliance in the business functions with a focus on driving efficiencies and continued growth. She leads the efforts in business growth through the proposal process, working with Government and Industry partnerships.  She plays a key role in developing and leading strategic planning initiatives for COLSA Corporation.     

Ms. Dickens was recognized with 3 Civilian Meritorious Service Awards, the AUSA Civilian of the Year Award, the Secretary of the Army Specialized Contracting Award, the Frank S. Besson Award, the Knight of the Honorable Order of St. Michael and numerous commendations for outstanding contributions during her career with the Army.  She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Athens State University and a Master’s of Science degree in Management from Florida Institute of Technology.  

Ms. Dickens serves as the Board Chair for the Athens State University Board of Trustees and as a member of the AUSA Civilian Advisory Committee. She is a member of AUSA, NCMA, NDIA and the Army Aviation Association of America.

Ms. Dickens has two married sons, two grandsons and a granddaughter.

 

How did Florida Tech help prepare you for your career? 

My education at Florida Tech was invaluable in broadening my knowledge and preparing me for senior level management positions.  The courses provided and the interaction with other students and my instructors, as well as the course material provided me with an ability to openly examine new ideas and think strategically.  

What advice or words of wisdom do you have for students and recent graduates?  

Find a career that drives your passion.  Do not settle for a “job.”  When you are passionate about what you do, you make a difference! 

What was your most memorable experience at Florida Tech? 

My most memorable experience was actually how the instructors worked with me to insure I received a quality education, but could continue to balance my career and family.  So many of the instructors provided advice and worked with me when I had to travel for my job.  

What accomplishments are you most proud of?  

I am proud to have had the opportunity to support our military throughout my career.  The military and their families sacrifice so much for our country.  I have spent my career in support of systems and services for our military and the space program.  Both are vital to our nation.  My first career was as an Army Civilian in the Federal Sector where I rose to the rank of Senior Executive Service and was the first female deputy to the Commanding General for the US Army Aviation and Missile Command.  I continue to serve in my second career with COLSA Corporation where we support the military and NASA in a broad range of technical and engineering services.  

What was the most difficult challenge or failure that you had to overcome in your career? 

I think the most difficult challenge was balancing completion of my education with taking care of family and having a full time career!  I had tremendous support from my spouse, family and mentors at work.  

If you were contacted by a student or recent graduate—what could you offer them?  

Never give up on becoming the best you can be through education, experience and self-reflection.  Always look for ways you can make a difference and pay it forward when you reach your goals and dreams.  

Can you have it all as a female…family, career, and success? 

Yes , you can do it, but it takes commitment, passion, drive, faith and most of all people who will support you and if you are blessed enough to reach those dreams, you have a responsibility to give back, reach back and help others!   

 

A native of Cyprus, Fahri Diner came to the United States on an academic scholarship to Florida Tech. He earned his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering and went on to become a modern-day renaissance man, currently holding five patents in the field of fiber optics and wireless communications. Fahri is the founder and CEO of Plume, the inventor of Adaptive Home WiFi. He is also managing director of early-stage venture capital firm Sigma Partners, and the proprietor of Skipstone, an organic and biodynamic winegrowing estate.

Diner was featured in Florida Tech’s 60^th Anniversary special edition book, “60 for 60: Celebrating Sixty Years of Alumni at Florida Institute of Technology.”

Wadad, raised in Brevard County like her sister Catharina, graduated from Florida Tech in 1981. She had her first exposure to military service while participating in Florida Tech’s Army ROTC program two years prior to graduation. Wadad went on to earn her MS and PhD in electrical engineering and applied physics from the University of California, San Diego. She accomplished all of this while working full-time at the U.S. Navy’s Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific (SSC Pacific), where she has spent her entire career as a Navy civilian. “Florida Tech provided the rigorous academic program I needed to set the stage for my successful career and my doctorate. I learned leadership skills and discipline that have helped me my whole life,” she said.

Dubbelday was featured in Florida Tech’s 60^th Anniversary special edition book, “60 for 60: Celebrating Sixty Years of Alumni at Florida Institute of Technology.”

Reagan DuBose, Jr., AS 1961, BS 1963 was the first graduate of Brevard Engineering College, carved a path for all the students who came after him at Florida Institute of Technology. A native of Dallas, Texas, he was able to transfer credits from Rice Institute in Houston and graduate with an associate of science in 1961, completing his coursework in only five semesters.

DuBose was featured in Florida Tech’s 60^th Anniversary special edition book, “60 for 60: Celebrating Sixty Years of Alumni at Florida Institute of Technology.” 

Mr. Dunsmore is the Founder and CEO of The Digital Truth LLC, a consulting business that helps companies achieve transformational growth. He has been operating The Digital Truth since June, 2016.  Mr. Dunsmore retired as Chairman and CEO of Digi International in December, 2014. Mr. Dunsmore joined Digi in October 1999 as President and Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Board of Directors, and was elected Chairman of the Board in May 2000. Prior to joining the Company, Mr. Dunsmore had been Vice President of Access for Lucent Microelectronics, a telecommunications company now known as Agere Systems Inc. From 1995 to 1998, he was a Vice President at U.S. Robotics. Prior to that, Mr. Dunsmore held various marketing management positions at AT&T Paradyne Corporation from 1983 to 1995. Mr. Dunsmore is also a board director TreeHouse, a nonprofit organization, and was on the Advisory Committee for the University of Northern Iowa School of Business for 12 years. Mr. Dunsmore was a board director at Analysts International Corporation from 2009 until the company was sold in 2013.  Mr. Dunsmore holds a BA from the University of Northern Iowa and an MBA from the Florida Institute of Technology.

How did Florida Tech help prepare you for your career?

Florida Tech was the best educational experience I had in my life. Pursuing my master's degree while working enriched the educational experience and made it very real-world and relevant. Florida Tech enhanced my effectiveness at work and my work enhanced my educational process at Tech.

What advice or words of wisdom do you have for students and recent graduates?

Find the intersection of what you are really good at and what you are really passionate about. 

What accomplishments are you most proud of?

Earlier in my career, it was more about getting the next promotion and achieving the next milestone. However, the things that I have derived the most satisfaction from are associated with helping people and companies achieve and accomplish beyond even their own expectations.

What was the most difficult challenge or failure that you had to overcome in your career?

There are too many failures to count. The most important thing is to acknowledge the failure, learn something, and move on.

If you were contacted by a student or recent graduate—what could you offer them?

Something Robert Waller taught me that he called “the value of the small increment”.

The basic principle is …..if you work even 1/4% harder and smarter than your competition every single day, the compounding value of that tiny increment will create a significant competitive advantage for you over the long term”.  If you can find that intersection of what you are best at and most passionate about and apply “ the value of the small increment” principle you will likely have a fun, interesting, and successful career.

 

Ann Dunwoody, a fourth-generation Army soldier, grew up understanding what it meant to serve her country. As America’s first female four-star general and former commanding general of the U.S. Army Materiel Command, she truly learned that leaders never stop learning, refining, growing, and adapting.

General Dunwoody was featured in Florida Tech’s 60^th Anniversary special edition book, “60 for 60: Celebrating Sixty Years of Alumni at Florida Institute of Technology.”

Gene is the founder and chief executive of ForensicPathways, Inc. For more than thirty years, he has been involved in the study of organizational culture, governance, and compliance. He is the author of sixteen books and frequently speaks on the topics of effective human resource management, workplace culture, and unethical behavior in the workplace, as well as complex internal investigations. He reminds us, “The truth is only theory until proven otherwise.”

Gene was featured in Florida Tech’s 60^th Anniversary special edition book, “60 for 60: Celebrating Sixty Years of Alumni at Florida Institute of Technology.” 

Julian has always loved technology, which is why he was involved in creating FITV, the student-run and operated TV station at Florida Tech. These days, he lends his expertise to many start-up companies. He is a senior advisor working with businesses on their ecommerce strategy and implementation. Currently, Julian is founding chairman of a start-up that is developing solar-powered vehicles and director of an education services business. “My time at Florida Tech when I helped create FITV really planted the seed for my future career. It cultivated my love for technology and my entrepreneurship,” he said.

It was his hustle on and off the basketball court that Tom was really known for. After graduating from Florida Tech, Tom worked as an auto broker and caught the attention of some business executives looking to diversify their retail business. These executives were in the beginning stages of creating CarMax, which began as a test concept by the corporate parent of Circuit City. Folliard joined CarMax in 1993 as the company’s very first buyer. CarMax spun off from Circuit City in 2002 during restructuring, and its business boomed. Since then, CarMax Inc. has grown to be the largest used-vehicle retailer.

For thirty- four years, David was one of the behind-the- scenes people in charge of the exhilarating shows at SeaWorld. He was involved with the development of training techniques for SeaWorld performances, animal/guest interactions, and scientific discoveries. Through his work directing the activities of trainers, curators, veterinarians, and biologists, he provided unparalleled contributions to our understanding of marine mammals and their ocean habitats. These contributions are still relevant today.

Alvaro graduated from Florida Tech in 1992 with a degree in aerospace engineering. The Spanish native followed in the footsteps of his father who was an aerospace engineer and successful businessman in the aerospace industry, his companies serving as the Spanish representative for U.S. firms such as McDonnell Douglas, Boeing, and Lockheed Martin.           

Alvaro, along with his brothers, took over leadership of their father’s companies. He currently serves as president of Aeronáutica Española and managing director of Compañía Aeronáuticos Española. Both companies are leading foreign aerospace manufacture sales representatives in Spain. He is also the founder and board member of Spawer Oil, focused on commodities like crude oil and refined oil derivatives, and specialized in the international trade market of food products, additives, and industrial ingredients.

Recognizing the opportunities in the fast-changing energy arena, Fúster co-founded Spanish Power. This Madrid-based renewable energy power supplier harnesses the wind to generate power throughout Spain, Sweden, Norway, and Finland, as well as solar photovoltaic power in Spain and Mexico. Spanish Power continues to grow with projects in development in Baja California, Mexico, and the United Arab Emirates.

When asked about his advice for current Florida Tech students, he said, “The keys to success are effort, attitude, passion, and keeping God always by your side.”

He is a member of the board of trustees of Santa Maria de los Rosales School in Madrid since 1990. In addition, Alvaro is a member of Florida Tech’s International Advisory Board. Alvaro was a member of Florida Tech’s 1991 national champion soccer team and, as a part of the team, was inducted into the Florida Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.

Jen originally wanted to be a veterinarian, even taking courses to prepare her for that career. At some point, she found a higher calling and decided that wasn’t the life for her. She took her commission in the Air Force, and after graduation from pilot training, First Lt. Jennifer Gillette is flying the F-15E Strike Eagle fighter aircraft.

Jeff’s career has taken him through many exciting adventures and journeys. Beginning with twenty-one years of service at the United States Central Intelligence Agency, he held positions in the Directorate of Intelligence, the Directorate of Science and Technology, and the National Reconnaissance Office.

Grant was featured in Florida Tech’s 60^th Anniversary special edition book, “60 for 60: Celebrating Sixty Years of Alumni at Florida Institute of Technology.” 

Svafa Grönfeldt, PhD, has built parallel careers in academia and entrepreneurship. A member of a founding team of Alvogen, a global life science company, Svafa serves on the executive team where she has led the company’s organizational development, communication, and strategic planning initiatives from the start. She is also a founding member and chair of the advisory board for SA+P DesignX, an innovation accelerator at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and serves as the senior advisor to the dean on entrepreneurship. She is a member of the board of directors for Ossur, a Nasdaq Copenhagen listed orthopedic company, as well as the Florida Tech Board of Trustees and International Advisory Board.

Svafa was featured in Florida Tech’s 60^th Anniversary special edition book, “60 for 60: Celebrating Sixty Years of Alumni at Florida Institute of Technology.”

Fitzgerald “Fidgi” Haig arrived at Florida Tech from his native Haiti in the fall of 1987. Fidgi was part of a new wave of international soccer players recruited to turn the soccer program into championship contenders. He played four seasons for the Panthers, helping to win Florida Tech’s first-ever NCAA National Championship in 1988. During his stellar career he earned all-region, all-state, and all-SCC honors. To this day, he remains fourth in career goals (43) and fifth in career points (105) in the Panthers record book.

Fidgi was featured in Florida Tech’s 60^th Anniversary special edition book, “60 for 60: Celebrating Sixty Years of Alumni at Florida Institute of Technology.”

Catharina, a Brevard County native, was appointed by President George W. Bush to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in April of 2008. Prior to taking the federal bench, she served eight years as a Texas state district judge in Dallas. In addition to her judicial service, Judge Haynes spent thirteen years in private practice, including more than five years as a partner and six years as an associate in the trial section of Baker Botts, LLP’s Dallas office.

Judge Haynes was featured in Florida Tech’s 60^th Anniversary special edition book, “60 for 60: Celebrating Sixty Years of Alumni at Florida Institute of Technology.”

Heflich was attracted to Florida Tech for two reasons: its proximity to the beach and its connection to the space industry. While earning his bachelor of science in electrical engineering from Florida Tech in 1973, Chip worked for NASA at Kennedy Space Center on the Saturn V rocket. Chip especially enjoyed his coursework in solid state physics, and after graduation he decided to leave the space industry to pursue a career designing analog integrated circuits for Texas Instruments (TI). Here, his passion for invention and entrepreneurial spirit thrived.

Heflich was featured in Florida Tech’s 60^th Anniversary special edition book, “60 for 60: Celebrating Sixty Years of Alumni at Florida Institute of Technology.” 

Mr. Miguel A. Hernandez, Jr. was born in Havana, Cuba in 1941 and immigrated to the United States in 1960. He earned an Engineering degree from the University of Florida, followed by a Master’s degree in Systems Management at Florida Tech. Mike started his engineering career in 1967 working for NASA at Kennedy Space Center as a simulation engineer in the Flight Crew Training Division. There he specialized in spacecraft systems and was part of the team that trained the Apollo astronauts for their missions to the Moon. In 1982, Mike Hernandez founded Hernandez Engineering Inc. (HEI). For 25 years, served as President and Chief Operating Officer of HEI which became a well-known and highly successful engineering firm.  Effective June 2007, HEI was acquired by Bastion Technologies, Inc.  Mr. Hernandez continues his career as a Senior Engineering Advisor to the President of Bastion Technologies, Inc.

Over 45 years in the Aerospace Industry, Miguel has numerous accomplishments and accolades. He supported several missions at the Control Center in Houston including the Apollo 13 for which he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom as part of the Mission Operations Team. He led teams on simulator development, training material development and presentation, procedures development, and flight crew and flight controllers training for Apollo, Sky Lab and early Shuttle programs.

As President of Hernandez Engineering, he led a contract with the German Space Agency (DLR) on all aspects of manned spaceflight operations and payload integration for two Shuttle/Space Lab missions (D-1 and D-2), Germany had contracted with NASA.

He created companies in Germany and in The Netherlands, that supported for over 2 decades ESA and the European Space Industry in all aspects of human space flight operations, and safety, including supporting the design of the MPLM and Columbus Module for the ISS, the Italian Tethered Satellite and the French Hermes spacecraft. He also contracted with the Japanese Space Agency/JAMMS supporting their integration of experiment /payloads on the Shuttle.

Hernandez’s actions brought to the European Space community the expertise needed to make the transition from satellite operations to human space flight operations.

 

 

How did Florida Tech help prepare you for your career? 

While working as a NASA engineer at KSC, it became apparent to me the importance of continuing my studies to obtain a Master Degree in Engineer Management.

Later on when Hernandez Engineering Inc. was created the knowledge obtained, via the material of that management degree from Florida Tech., became the foundation to run all aspects of the company which grew to more than 700 employees, with contracts at most of the NASA Centers , contracts with the NAVY and Air Force and 2 additional companies, one in Germany and another in The Netherlands .

 

What advice or words of wisdom do you have for students and recent graduates?  

Apply yourself well as a student. That material you are receiving will be of great value for the rest of your life. Figure out what you would really enjoy doing and set your course to be the best you can be at it. Understand that the easiest way is in most cases, not the best way.

Success in life is self-defined. Don’t be afraid, go ahead and find your success!

 

What was your most memorable experience at Florida Tech? 

How helpful everyone was to help me operate through some of the requirements of a university. When I had only a few courses to graduate NASA transferred me from Florida to Texas. First I faced all kinds of obstacles at both ends to be able to finish my courses. But as I started talking to professors and members of Administration the problems were getting resolved and I was able to take my courses in different ways and graduate.

 

What accomplishments are you most proud of?  

I have found my success in my family and in business.

Sujit Jain's career goal was to make a difference in the automotive industry. He earned his master's in mechanical engineering from Florida Tech in 1983 after earning a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology in Nagpur, India. With his Florida Tech degree, Jain began his career in the automotive industry with TI Automotive. In 2000, he was named Vice President of the Powertrain Division at Robert Bosch NA. He is now President, Powertrain Solutions - Passenger Cars, Commercial & Off-Road, and Electric Vehicles, a $3 billion division.

 

How did Florida Tech help prepare you for your career?

The advanced combustion engine courses (with Dr. Thomas Bowman) that I took as electives at Florida Tech laid the foundation of my 40-year-long career in the area of automotive powertrain business.

 

What advice or words of wisdom do you have for students and recent graduates?

Pursue the work that you are most passionate about. Everything else will fall into place.

 

What accomplishments are you most proud of?

It was being able to live out my dreams. When I graduated from Florida Tech, I envisioned building a career in the automotive powertrain business. Being able to run a $3 Billion powertrain business at the most iconic company in its field gives me a great sense of fulfillment.

 

What was the most difficult challenge or failure that you had to overcome in your career?

At the time of my graduation from Florida Tech in the early 80s, the US was undergoing a severe recession, and jobs were very hard to come by for Mechanical Engineering graduates. Many of my classmates even switched their major to Computer Science, as it was a new, coveted field at the time. Although it was a difficult decision, I continued to pursue my passion for the automotive powertrain industry. Despite many setbacks, I remained persistent and was fortunate to land roles that led me to today.

 

If you were contacted by a student or recent graduate—what could you offer them?

I would be happy to offer mentorship to students pursuing a similar field.

Scott had a distinguished career in the U.S. Air Force. He was commander of both the 45th Launch Group and the 2nd Space Operations Squadron with the mission of command and control of the GPS satellite constellation, as well as management of the Milstar satellite communications system for the Air Force Space and Missile System Center. Scott joined SpaceX in 2009 where he led the launch safety and mission assurance team charged with launching the first Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft.

Henderson was featured in Florida Tech’s 60^th Anniversary special edition book, “60 for 60: Celebrating Sixty Years of Alumni at Florida Institute of Technology.”

Among the earliest students of Brevard Engineering College (BEC), the precursor of Florida Tech, Al earned his master’s degree in 1964 and also served as an undergraduate teacher.

Prior to Al’s enrollment at BEC, he joined RCA as a junior mathematician—even though his undergraduate degree was in social sciences, which he earned at the University of the Philippines while serving in Air Force intelligence. He soon learned senior scientists working at Cape Canaveral were setting up an engineering college offering graduate courses in the evening, and he enrolled in the applied mathematics master’s degree program in the fall of 1960. At the invitation of Ray Work, acting dean of BEC, Al also taught a general college chemistry course at what was to become Florida Tech. He then went on to earn his doctorate in political science from George Washington University in 1970.

Dr. Kaltman was featured in Florida Tech’s 60^th Anniversary special edition book, “60 for 60: Celebrating Sixty Years of Alumni at Florida Institute of Technology.”

His Excellency Khaled Al Kamda, pictured here sailing during his down time, has contributed to major advancements in banking, cargo, airport development, air travel, real estate, and world capital that benefited the development of Dubai. He has extensive experience with strategic growth planning in vital public and private sector organizations. He has held several senior positions with major companies and institutions during his three-decade career.

Khaled Al Kamda was featured in Florida Tech’s 60^th Anniversary special edition book, “60 for 60: Celebrating Sixty Years of Alumni at Florida Institute of Technology.”

Davon learned lessons of teamwork and sportsmanship during his time on the basketball courts at Florida Tech. He has since taken these lessons with him into the business world. He shares the lessons he learned on the court in his book, From Courtside to the Boardroom: A Legacy in the Making. Kelly believes in the importance of mentoring the next generation by exposing them to new ideas and experiences. Because of this belief, he founded The 13th Man organization to provide training, mentoring, leadership development, and enrichment activities to equip young men with the necessary tools to move from feelings of inadequacy to being in the “starting lineup.” All proceeds from his book sales are donated to The 13th Man.

Davon was featured in Florida Tech’s 60^th Anniversary special edition book, “60 for 60: Celebrating Sixty Years of Alumni at Florida Institute of Technology.” 

After a twenty-five- year career with NASA that began in 1983 at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Dave played key roles in more than 100 space shuttle missions. His retirement from NASA in 2009 as director of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, where he served as center director overseeing 7,000 onsite employees and contractors with a $2.7 billion budget, simply opened the door for new opportunities in space system development and operations in the private sector.

King was featured in Florida Tech’s 60^th Anniversary special edition book, “60 for 60: Celebrating Sixty Years of Alumni at Florida Institute of Technology.”

In 2016, just four years after joining Turkish Airlines, Mert became the company’s youngest captain candidate ever with more than 4,000 hours of flight time He achieved the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airmen Certification, given to pilots who have exceeded the FAA’s educational, licensing, and medical standards. Mert is currently a board member with Lens Yapi, a leading building and development firm in Istanbul. The firm is building the largest residential and commercial project in Turkey as well as building one of the tallest buildings in Europe.

Huntley A. Lawrence’s love for flying began when he was just a child. After moving from London to Queens, New York, with his family, he attended the aviation program offered at his school and learned firsthand about flight. Lawrence earned his pilot’s license shortly after graduating high school and chose Florida Tech for its aviation program. He received his bachelor of science degree from Florida Tech and went on to earn his MBA from Dowling College. Lawrence is an accredited member of the American Association of Airport Executives.

Lawrence was featured in Florida Tech’s 60^th Anniversary special edition book, “60 for 60: Celebrating Sixty Years of Alumni at Florida Institute of Technology.”

(Born December 8, 1933) Sir Robert F. Marx is one of the pioneer American Scuba divers and is best known for his work with shipwrecks and sunken treasure.

Marx became a diving specialist in the United States Marine Corps in 1953. He has since made over 5,000 dives and has authored over 800 reports/articles and 59 books on history, archaeology, shipwrecks and exploration.

Marx and his wife, Jennifer, live in Indialantic, Florida. They are co-authors of several non-fiction books.

He was a founding member of the Council on Underwater Archaeology and of the Sea Research Society and served on the Society’s Board of Advisors. In 1972, he participated in the creation of the research/professional degree of Doctor of Marine Histories.

Marx was made a Knight-commander of the order of Isabella the Catholic by the Spanish government for his re-enactment in the Nina II of Christopher Columbus’ first voyage of exploration.

Jennifer McCarthy combines business acumen and emotional intelligence to make sure the healthcare operations she oversees never lose sight of patient needs and satisfaction. As a healthcare executive with a passion for business and healthcare delivery, Jennifer has served in various c-suite positions within large health systems including, most recently, hospital CEO. Her time with Health First, Orlando Health, and Inova, Inc., has allowed her the opportunity to serve others, make sustainable, significant operational impacts to billion-dollar organizations, and improve the lives and health of the community in which she works.

Sean fell in love with aviation at an early age. While living in Ireland as a child, he would watch planes take off and land from his family’s home near the Dublin Airport. His passion for flying propelled McGeough to pursue a career in the clouds. He earned his MBA from Florida Tech in 2005. He is currently executive vice president of Wheels Up, a private aviation solution provider. He has also held key leadership and sales roles with Aerion, Nextant Aerospace, Hawker Beechcraft, Raytheon Aircraft, and Diamond Aircraft.

David Mecartney, driven by a childhood dream of becoming a pilot and escaping the harsh Chicago winters, matriculated at Florida Institute of Technology in 1978 and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Flight Technology & Aviation Management. He obtained all his of his flight ratings including a CFI. Due to an economic recession dampening the prospects of becoming a commercial pilot, he pursued a career as a consultant. After graduating in 1982, Mr. Mecartney was employed as an entry level planner at BNP Associates, Inc., a worldwide consulting firm specializing in the design of baggage handling, cargo handling, security screening, and parcel handling systems related to airports.

When he started at BNP, the company had a single office in Stamford, CT with only 7 employees. After working his way through the company, he became President of BNP in 1995, and has since grown and proliferated the company to employ over 100 personnel across multiple offices around the world. Under David’s leadership, BNP has provided consultancy services to some of the largest airports in the world, including Singapore, Chicago, Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, and Orlando. While President, he continued to pursue his passion for flying, acquiring initially a Skyhawk, moving to a Saratoga, a couple of Meridians, two Mustangs and now flies his own Cessna Citation CJ3+. Along with flying, David also endeavors several philanthropic interests, especially support for Colorado Children’s Hospital. His interests include golf and road biking.

David has three children and currently lives in Jackson Hole, WY.

Born and raised in Mozambique, Africa, and of Portuguese descent, Jorge is a true global citizen. He has lived and worked in several countries, including Venezuela, Mexico, Brazil, and the United States.

Spending more than forty percent of his time abroad in global leadership roles, Jorge speaks Portuguese, Spanish, and English fluently.

Before the Civil Rights Act made equal employment opportunity the law, Julius was making history in 1956 as the first black professional in the U.S. space program. It seems only natural that he would go on to integrate Florida Tech just a few years later.

Johnny M. Moore, PhD, remembers when it was time to enter college: the buzz was that computers were going to take over the world, so he chose computer science as his major. After realizing that his major would have him stuck in a computer lab, Moore, a standout athlete, switched his major to math. However, mathematics was an acquired taste, and he didn’t fully appreciate it until he taught the subject in graduate school.

Randy is all about business and baseball. His love for both started at Florida Tech. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business in 1978, and he went on to earn his MBA in 1980. As a four-year letterman in baseball, Muns’s love for the game was evidenced by his generous support for the new baseball field, Andy Seminick-Les Hall Field, and his lead gift that helped Florida Tech reach its fundraising goal to light the baseball field. Randy also serves on Florida Tech’s Board of Trustees. Randy began his career in the aerospace and defense business at Bell Helicopter, TEXTRON, and General Dynamics. He became a principal/partner with Author Young in their special services and technology consulting group.

Muns was featured in Florida Tech’s 60^th Anniversary special edition book, “60 for 60: Celebrating Sixty Years of Alumni at Florida Institute of Technology.” 

Terence served as a merchant seaman after World War II, as well as an aircraft and engine mechanic at Kimpo Air Force Base, Korea, until 1952. In 1966, Terence earned a master of science degree in applied mathematics from Florida Institute of Technology. As a graduate student, he developed and taught courses in linear algebra, matrices, and mathematics for managers.

Murdock was featured in Florida Tech’s 60^th Anniversary special edition book, “60 for 60: Celebrating Sixty Years of Alumni at Florida Institute of Technology.” 

Mike' career began at the Johnson Space Center as a flight controller in the Mission Operations Directorate in 1995 as a contractor, converting to be a full-time NASA employee in 1998. He was a member of the Space Shuttle Propulsion Systems Group, becoming the Lead of that group in 2001, He also served as the Lead for the Shuttle Electrical Systems Group. In 2005, Mike was selected to become a Flight Director, overseeing mission planning and operations for Space Shuttle missions. He was the lead flight director for the STS-123/ 1JA mission in February 2008.

It is every scientist’s dream to be the first to discover something. Max’s moment came in 2005 while working at the Space Telescope Science Institute. As he was cleaning and inspecting some Hubble Space Telescope images, two blips on the screen caught his attention. They were faint satellites moving around Pluto in the same direction as Charon, Pluto’s moon that was discovered in 1978. After Max worked with other scientists to verify the discovery, it was officially announced. Later Hubble observations in 2011 and 2012 revealed two more moons of Pluto. Asteroid “6815 Mutchler” was named in honor of Max’s role in these discoveries.

The most unique places inspire Dr. Sungjin Park. As the president and CEO of The Vine Corporation, he created technology that was inspired by an unlikely source: the bobcat. The Vine Corporation offers “Voice Improvement Neural Engine” software solutions that improve the audio clarity of cell phones and other electronic devices. When Dr. Park learned the bobcat has a keen sense of hearing and the ability to catch very small signals that other animals cannot detect, he went on to develop the “Consonant Restoration” filter. This catches very small consonant signals and restores them in real time. The filter has been patented and licensed to more than fifty million devices.

Road trips and automobiles are part of Rob Phebus’s DNA. His father did not like to fly, and his mother did not like boats, so family life revolved around the car. Ford vehicles were the transport of choice—the two occasions his family did not drive a Ford are exceptions that left less than favorable impressions.

Sanjay is CEO of JLL’s Corporate Solutions business in the Americas. JLL is a world leader in commercial real estate services.

Throughout his career, Sanjay has helped large, complex, global businesses achieve their ambitions through disruptive technology and transformational change. At JLL, his responsibilities include helping clients drive strategic value from their workplaces and portfolios, while helping create a better world for their people, partners and communities.

Previously, Sanjay established and led IBM’s industry-leading Global Cloud Application Services business – focused on cloud technology and cognitive computing to drive digital transformation that not only helps organizations succeed, but dramatically changes the way industries do business. Before that, as a CIO in the automotive industry, he collaborated with C-level executives in numerous corporations around the world on innovation and transformation strategy.

Whether brainstorming one-on-one with corporate leaders, mentoring leaders of tomorrow, or speaking to a large gathering of industry professionals, Sanjay’s ambition is to help others target higher achievement through personal development, digital empowerment and industry transformation.

A regular contributor to industry discussions through media and speaking engagements, Sanjay holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Brila Institute of Technology in Jharkhand, India, a master of science degree in management systems from Florida Tech and a doctorate in management from Walsh College in Troy, MI. His doctoral work extended his practitioner experience into academic research focused on Organizational Transformations.

Outside of JLL, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters. He enjoys golf, is a hiker and considers high-altitude hiking in the Himalayas as one of his greatest adventures.

What advice or words of wisdom do you have for students and recent graduates?

"It is so critical that we reinvent ourselves in our careers, and not be afraid to take risks. Especially today, when digital and social interactions are transforming entire industries, stepping out of comfort zones, and an insatiable appetite to learn are essential skills."

How did Florida Tech help prepare you for your career?

At Florida Tech I found an environment that brought together faculty that blended practitioner experiences with academic acumen into classrooms with a diverse student body. This helped build the foundation of making strategic career choices, and the passionate pursuit of humble leadership.

What accomplishments are you most proud of?

Like most people, pride as a father and of my family are paramount. I also derived, and do to this day, gratification in completing my doctoral studies mid-career – experience enhanced with the rich heritage and discipline of academia and research provides a differentiated understanding of business.

Dr. Raymond “Tipper” Rumpf is a Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). He joined UTEP in 2010 to form the EM Lab where he has led a team of students to develop revolutionary technologies enabled by digital manufacturing. Rumpf’s research produced an array of significant breakthroughs in electromagnetics, photonics, and 3D printing that have earned his lab international recognition and accolades. His breakthroughs include spatially-variant lattices, new ways to control light, tightest bend of an optical beam, new ways to sculpt electromagnetic fields around electrical components, highest power frequency selective surface, thinnest dielectric antenna, automation of hybrid 3D printing and the first-ever 3D volumetric electric circuit. Rumpf is working with his business partner and best friend to commercialize some of these technologies through their business, Kraetonics LLC.

Before joining UTEP, Dr. Rumpf was the Chief Technology Officer for Prime Research LC in Blacksburg, Virginia. Rumpf helped the company transform its technology portfolio from strictly fiber optic sensors to an array of technologies for extreme applications. Before Prime, Rumpf was a Principal Investigator for Harris Corporation where he researched and developed technologies for radically miniaturizing communications systems. Dr. Rumpf has published dozens of peer-reviewed journal articles and has been awarded over a dozen United States Patents. He also holds five world records for skydiving.

Dr. Rumpf has been recognized for his commitment to students and excellence in teaching through numerous awards including the prestigious University of Texas Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award, the Dean Eugene Thomas Award for Outstanding Faculty Member, the BUILDing SCHOLARS & COE Mentoring Award, multiple Dean’s Awards for Teaching and the Miguel Izquierdo Endowment for Outstanding Teaching. His research has been equally recognized with a DARPA Young Faculty Award, Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research, Best Photonics Technology by Opli Magazine, the Shellenger Professorship in Electrical Research, and numerous feature articles covering his breakthroughs.

Dr. Rumpf earned his BS and MS in Electrical Engineering from Florida Tech in 1995 and 1997 respectively, and his PhD in Optics from the University of Central Florida in 2006. He serves as an Associate Editor for SPIE Optical Engineering and is active in outreach and mentoring of students in developing nations.  Rumpf developed a series of online courses, has made these freely available on EMPossible.net, and coaches hundreds of students from all parts of the world through the content.  He is a Fellow of SPIE, Senior Member of IEEE, and member of OSA and ARRL.

Dr. Rumpf currently lives in El Paso, Texas, with his wife, two children and his dog Ardie.

 

Mike credits Florida Tech and his rowing coach, Bill Jurgens, for helping to develop the leadership skills he’s taken with him throughout his career. His professional endeavors began at Newport News Shipbuilding in 1980 as a nuclear test engineer. Mike spent the first half of his career working on submarines, later moving to aircraft carriers. He has held various positions in engineering, program management, and business development.

Shawcross  was featured in Florida Tech’s 60^th Anniversary special edition book, “60 for 60: Celebrating Sixty Years of Alumni at Florida Institute of Technology.”

Jim graduated in 1974 with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, and his time at Florida Tech had him involved in many student activities. His experiences here, including his technology-based curriculum, presidency of the Student Government Association, and leadership development in his fraternity bolstered an entrepreneurial spirit he describes as “embedded in Panther DNA.” With a keen eye for the next big thing, Jim led a host of fledgling companies across the globe, serving as chief operations officer, chief financial officer, and division president. He steered early-growth companies into successful business operations with value-based cultures. His vision as a business executive helped lead MapQuest through its initial public offering.

Thomas was featured in Florida Tech’s 60^th Anniversary special edition book, “60 for 60: Celebrating Sixty Years of Alumni at Florida Institute of Technology.” 

Using a unique approach to IT security, Dr. Hugh Thompson has been helping organizations build more secure systems for more than a decade. Hugh studied applied mathematics at Florida Tech, earning his bachelor’s degree in 1998, master’s degree in 1999, and doctorate in 2002. Here, he learned the tools that influenced his current philosophy.

What does it take to find your path in the world? According to Vik, it is a simple, four-step process. Currently the chief executive officer of Silicon Valley-based 8x8, Inc., Verma is a frequent speaker who shares how four defining moments in his life have translated into this four-step process: (1) take a chance; (2) give your best, and the results will come; (3) be honest with yourself, and know your limitations; and (4) when you find your calling, go for it, and don’t let go.

Vik was featured in Florida Tech’s 60^th Anniversary special edition book, “60 for 60: Celebrating Sixty Years of Alumni at Florida Institute of Technology.”

For Tim Wakefield, Florida Tech was a springboard to his successful baseball career. In 1988, he was drafted in the eighth round by the Pittsburgh Pirates out of Florida Tech as a power-hitting first baseman. The records he set while at Florida Tech still stand.

Elizabeth Webbe Lunny’s passion for marketing and advertising began while she was a student at Florida Tech where her father, Dr. Frank Webbe, is a professor and the former dean of the School of Psychology. Elizabeth cultivated strong relationships with her professors while earning her bachelor’s degree in humanities. She credits her Florida Tech family—Dr. Gordon Patterson, Dr. Rudy Stoeckel, Father Doug Bailey, and others—for giving her the self-confidence that would ultimately catapult her career into the big leagues.

Rear Admiral White’s passion for oceanography and the Navy began before the age of seven, thanks to the influence of his mother and a Navy diver who lived next door. He earned his bachelor of science in oceanographic technology from Florida Tech and a master’s degree in oceanography and meteorology from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School.

R. Adm. White was featured in Florida Tech’s 60^th Anniversary special edition book, “60 for 60: Celebrating Sixty Years of Alumni at Florida Institute of Technology.”

Since he was seven years old, Leonard knew he wanted his career to involve the ocean. He earned his associate’s degree in oceanographic technology from Florida Tech in 1971 and his bachelor of science in oceanographic technology in 1973. He began his career on the submersible crew at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute where he supervised the first manned dives on the USS Monitor.

Whitlock was featured in Florida Tech’s 60^th Anniversary special edition book, “60 for 60: Celebrating Sixty Years of Alumni at Florida Institute of Technology.”

Captain Williams has accrued an impressive amount of spacewalk time: she spent 50 hours and 40 minutes outside of the International Space Station (ISS); and in completing two missions to the ISS, she has spent over eleven total months orbiting Earth. Back on the ground, Captain Williams has continued her career in the space industry as a member of NASA’s Commercial Crew Transportation Capability, a group of veteran astronauts who work with privately-held companies to develop spacecraft. Her contributions have helped to build the Boeing CST-100 Starliner and SpaceX Dragon. She is among four veteran astronauts chosen by NASA to fly the first commercial space vehicles.

Sunita was featured in Florida Tech’s 60^th Anniversary special edition book, “60 for 60: Celebrating Sixty Years of Alumni at Florida Institute of Technology.”

MG(Ret) Cedric Wins retired from the U.S. Army after serving for over 34 years. During that time, he led soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines in various assignments and as a commander. He is a combat veteran.

Cedric’s last assignment was the commanding general of the U.S. Army Combat Capability Development Command (CCDC) where he led the transformation and organizational realignment of CCDC from the Research, Development and Engineering Command (RDECOM). CCDC is the Army’s largest research & development organization with a mission to discover, develop and deliver technology that produces capability to ensure decisive overmatch in unified land operations for soldiers and the joint warfighter.

He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1985 with a bachelor’s degree in economics. He holds masters’ degrees in management from the Florida Institute of Technology and in national security and strategic studies from the National War College.

Throughout his career, Wins served on the Army and Joint Staffs in a number of assignments, his last as the Director, Force Development on the Army Staff. During his 34 years of service, he held leadership and staff assignments from the grade of Lieutenant to Lieutenant Colonel in the field artillery serving in Army Divisions. As a Colonel and General Officer, he led organizations in Army major commands, combatant commands and the Army and Joint staffs.

His operational deployments included a multi-national force and observers mission in the Sinai Egypt; and the NATO training mission for police development in Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Cedric was a highly decorated officer during his military career culminating with the Distinguished Service Medal.

What advice or words of wisdom do you have for students and recent graduates? 

"Your career path, life’s plan for you is not without turns and bumps in the road.  It’s not necessary for you to have it all figured out at a young age.  If you do, then great; but many of us don’t.  Its a journey.  My best advice is to develop a plan of what interest you; what are you passionate about?  Set some intermediate goals and every 3-5 years evaluate if you have accomplished them.   Ask yourself the question, “Am I where I wanted to be when I wrote this down as a goal?”  If you are not, adjust and move forward!"

What accomplishments are you most proud of? 

"I am most proud of my 34 years of service to the United States while serving in the Army.  Having not been sure what it was that I wanted to do coming out of college, I was initially proud of being the first in my family to earn a college degree.  Education was important to me and as I learned more, I wanted to continue on that path.  In addition to serving and leading soldiers at many levels, the Army gave me an opportunity to continue to grow and learn in a number of key areas critical to success in both the military and business."

 

James Wong had a wide range of cultural experiences during his childhood, growing up in the United States, Canada, and Hong Kong. James held various positions as a lawyer on Toyota’s eDiscovery team and as a tax lawyer at Baker and McKenzie, as well as PricewaterhouseCoopers. In 2010, he joined Hon Kwok Land Investment Co. Ltd., where he is currently the executive director. He also serves as executive director for the Chinney Group, which includes four publicly-listed companies in Hong Kong focused on high-tech engineering, construction, trading, investments, and real estate. The businesses range from building an eighty-story Hon Kwok Tower in Shenzhen to installing the air traffic management radar at the Hong Kong Airport. 

James was featured in Florida Tech’s 60^th Anniversary special edition book, “60 for 60: Celebrating Sixty Years of Alumni at Florida Institute of Technology.”

Jonathan Zung, PhD, knows what it takes to grow professionally. He began his career as an analytical chemist with Pfizer in 1991 and over the last twenty-five years has held a variety of executive leadership positions in the pharmaceutical and pharmaceutical services industries. Each of his roles has exposed Jonathan to new challenges and allowed him to operate outside his comfort zone. Jonathan currently serves as advisor to the CEO of WCG clinical and president of one of their operating divisions. Prior to that he served as group president for clinical development and commercialization services for Covance Drug Development, a LabCorp company. In that role he led a global organization of over 8,000 employees in sixty countries spanning all phases of clinical development and market access services.
