COPLA Alumni Awardees

Karl Evans ’99 M.S., '01 Psy.D. is a clinical psychologist who specializes in providing psychological services to medical patients in outpatient and inpatient settings. He enjoys this niche, as he gets to work with patients who would otherwise not be exposed to psychological strategies to improve their lives. 

He has been employed by Columbus Regional Hospital for 23 years, where he has been part of initiating interdisciplinary treatment teams in the areas of chronic pain and bariatrics. He also enjoys leading process groups on an inpatient psychiatric unit, conducting dementia evaluations, and implementing cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia to provide variety in his practice. 

In addition to his work at the hospital, Evans has a small private practice where he conducts forensic evaluations and provides Gottman Couples Counseling. 

Evans attributes much of his success in helping patients to the training and clinical experiences provided at Florida Tech. He also feels honored to practice in the Veterans Administration early in his career, working with combat veterans, prisoners of war, and individuals affected by substance abuse. He believes that those early experiences added to the foundation laid at Florida Tech.  

Although his work focuses on helping others, most of Evans’ free time is spent on volunteer activities.

He helped start New Day Residents Encounter Christ (REC), which is a volunteer organization that trains and equips groups of volunteers to bring a message of hope to those incarcerated, provide mentorship, and facilitate transition to sober living housing and into the community. 

They have been able to reach thousands of incarcerated individuals in six county jails throughout south-central Indiana.

Evans also spends much of his time volunteering as one of about 1,600 Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) teaching leaders worldwide, which involves giving weekly lectures, coordinating volunteers, and training group leaders.     

Evans’ most satisfying accomplishment is living a life of adventure and service with his wife, Jamie, and seeing his four grown children finding their wings and flying.
