What is Accounting?

Get a Master's in Accounting

The Accounting B.S.

Accounting is the systematic process of recording, analyzing and reporting financial transactions.

Accurate financial records, such as income, expenses, assets and liabilities, are essential for understanding a business's financial health. These records inform financial statements, supporting decision-making by management, investors, regulators and other stakeholders, and ensuring legal compliance.

An accounting degree offers a strong foundation in financial management, strategic planning and analytical skills, essential for effective leadership. It’s no wonder that many top executives and successful entrepreneurs have accounting backgrounds.

As the global economy blends accounting practices, careers in accounting have broadened. At Florida Tech, students prepare for accounting careers in the wider business world and for graduate programs in accountancy, business and law.

A degree in accounting opens opportunities in a wide range of careers. Whether you are interested in auditing financial statements and ensuring compliance with regulations or focusing on an organization’s internal financial processes and strategic planning, accounting expertise is needed throughout industry.

Other career paths include forensic accounting to investigate financial fraud and discrepancies and specializing in tax return preparation and advising. Opportunities exist in government agencies, non-profit organizations and financial consulting firms, as well, providing a wealth of versatile and rewarding career options.

Careers in accounting include, of course, working as an accountant—but also roles such as:
