What is a biomedical science degree?

Biomedical Science BS

The biomedical science degree is designed to fulfill the admission requirements for medical or veterinary school while providing in-depth training in the biological sciences. Biomedical science students build a strong foundation in mathematics, chemistry, and biology and take specialized courses in anatomy, microbiology, genetics, physiology, developmental biology, and immunology.

Whether you want to explore the mysteries of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, become a leader in cancer research, or gain entry into a prestigious medical, veterinary, or dental school, Florida Tech’s BS in Biomedical Science program provides a firm grounding. Two biology advising seminars, one of which is specifically designed for pre-med students, help you choose your specialty and outline your course of study.

Gain Practical Experience

By combining the high-powered research labs usually found only in big universities with the small size of a private college, Florida Tech gives undergraduates in the biomedical science degree program an opportunity to interact with faculty and become involved in important research projects early in their academic career.

The program is hands-on, with small classes and intensive faculty-student interaction. As a student in the biomedical science degree program, you can undertake exciting collaborative research with a peer or professor or work independently in a topic of your choosing. Students also participate in summer research programs at other universities and corporations. Recent research sites include the Life Science Labs at Kennedy Space Center, Midwest Research Institute, the East Central Florida Memory Disorder Clinic, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and Michigan State University.

Ranked in the top 7% of America’s colleges and universities, Florida Tech is one of the best pre-med colleges for biomedical studies.

Internationally Recognized Faculty, Small Classes, and Personalized Attention

Because Florida Tech is a small research university specializing in science and technology, active research scientists teach our students. Faculty members receive national recognition, and conduct cutting-edge research in ecology, population biology, conservation science, and climate change in their own laboratories. In addition, PhD professors—not graduate students—teach all your lecture classes. To guide students in the program, a health professions advisory committee and a chief health professions advisor ensure that students are updated on admission requirements, admission tests, and professional school application procedures.

State-of-the-Art Research Facilities

Unlike many other colleges with biomedical studies, our students benefit from cutting-edge research facilities right on campus. The F.W. Engineering Complex is equipped with 21st century technology and contains eight teaching labs, 12 modern research labs, and a 16-workstation computer facility. Also available are many high-tech tools that allow students to gain hands-on research experience, including high-end photomicroscopes, a scanning electron microscope, and all manner of laboratory equipment, from centrifuges to growth chambers. The building also includes animal care facilities for housing small mammals and reptiles, and a temperature-controlled 800 sq. ft. greenhouse. The department has excellent teaching facilities with a state-of-the-art multimedia auditorium and classroom.

Great Florida Location—Access to Natural Laboratories On- and Off-Campus

Our location also makes us one of the best pre-med colleges for biomedical studies with natural laboratories accessible year-round for field research. Close by are the nation's most bio-diverse estuary, an experimental forest with over 700 tagged trees, and access to natural resources such as the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian River Lagoon, lakes, and wetlands.

Our 130-acre campus is located on the Space Coast (because of the presence of NASA and the Kennedy Space Center on Cape Canaveral just north of us). The area has the fifth largest high-tech workforce in the country, with more than 5,000 high-tech corporations and government and military organizations located nearby. This workforce provides a variety of internship and employment opportunities.

Central Florida attractions such Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Studios are only a short drive away. In addition, Florida Tech has a rich campus life that includes intramural and collegiate sports, clubs, and social activities.

Build Lasting Professional Relationships through Campus Organizations

Beyond the classroom, biomedical science majors build leadership and professional experience through exciting internships and participation in academic organizations like Beta Beta Beta (TriBeta, th biological sciences honor society), the Pre-med Club, student government, and over 100 other student organizations. Each of these experiences gives you a way to interact with other students, professors, and industry professionals.

The Florida Tech Pre-med Club is a group of students who are dedicated to helping each other reach their graduate school goals. Members study for standardized tests in the medical field (such as the MCAT) and network for job and biomedical science internship opportunities. They also participate in regular field trips to medical schools and listen to guest lecturers.

How will a biomedical science degree prepare me for the future?

Peerless Study and Internship Opportunities

One reason Florida Tech is one of the best pre-med colleges for biomedical studies is because the program extends beyond classroom teaching with internships, summer research programs at other universities and colleges, and professional activities by the student chapter of the American Medical Student Association. Students are strongly encouraged by professors to get involved in meaningful research, with many winning awards at national conferences or publishing papers with their faculty advisors.

Biomedical science internships are a valuable part of the learning experience for Florida Tech students looking to enter medicine-related fields after college. Our students take part in internships around Florida and the country, working for businesses and organizations that match their interests. Some of these companies include:

  • Life Sciences Lab at Kennedy Space Center
  • Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory
  • Our many area hospitals
  • Brevard Zoo
  • East Central Florida Memory Disorder Clinic
  • Kennedy Space Center

Other students in the program prefer to spend their time getting hands-on medical experience during their biomedical science internship, volunteering at local hospitals, or shadowing physicians. Through biomedical science internships, our students can gather the experience that will put them ahead of the competition when entering graduate schools and careers.

Superb/Stunning Undergraduate Research Opportunities

Florida Tech student researchers in the pre-med program may participate in summer research at Florida Tech or other universities and corporations around the country. Past students have won awards at national conferences and published papers with their faculty advisors on such topics as:

  • Infrared vision in snakes
  • DNA replication
  • Alzheimer's disease
  • Developmental biology

With this experience, students are well prepared to pursue advanced degrees in biology and medicine, or go immediately into the workforce.
