Personal Overview

Professor Murshid is pushing the state-of-the-art in optical fiber bandwidth using hybrid optical architectures. His contributions include the addition of two new degrees of photon freedom to optical fiber multiplexing techniques, spatial domain multiplexing - also known as space division multiplexing (SDM), and orbital angular momentum (OAM) of photon-based multiplexing. Earlier publications relevant to these endeavors include Optics and Laser Technology article on SDM, FIO presentation on OAM, and SPIE paper on SDM & OAM. His current research revolves around combining these technologies for communication architectures exceeding 100Tb/s. In summary, Professor Murshid is the

Professional Experience

Dr. Murshid teaches optical electronics, fiber optics, virtual instrumentation and electrical circuits courses at graduate and undergraduate levels. Before joining Florida Tech., he served industry for nearly 10 years in different capacities, including that of a consultant for instrumentation, data logging systems, power electronics, fiber optics and electrooptic systems.

Prior to joining Florida Tech in 1999, Dr. Murshid worked for the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Research Institute on a research grant sponsored by the Office of Naval Research.

Research & Project Interests

Dr. Murshid's research revolves around fiber optic communications and sensors. He is also interested in photonics, instrumentation, and power electronics.

Research sponsors in government and industry have supported Dr. Murshid regularly. He has worked on many research grants. Recent endeavors include those from NASA, the Office of Naval Research, the Department of Transportation, and the Department of Defense. Recently completed sponsored projects include Liquid propellant level detection for space launch systems (NASA), Optical delay line correlation (U.S. Navy), Channel impulse response characterization (ONR) and Multiplying optical channel capacity through spatial multiplexing, (Kuwait Foundation for Advancement of Sciences - KFAS).
