Crossover Online Course Registration

This guideline provides academic colleges and the Registrar's Office with a framework for managing crossover online course sections—online courses that may be available for registration by students enrolled in face-to-face (F2F) programs. The guideline is designed to balance student access to online courses, faculty workload, and the effective delivery of online instruction. By establishing clear expectations, the Office of the Provost supports consistency, quality, and flexibility across instructional modalities.

General Course Capacity

All online courses eligible for F2F student registration (crossover courses) are set to half the capacity of the course's established maximum enrollment limit. For example, if the maximum enrollment is 30, the crossover section capacity is set at 15.

Specific Course Capacity Exceptions

The following courses are exceptions to the half-capacity rule and are set to the maximum capacity for online enrollment for the terms they are offered:

  • COM 1101 Composition and Rhetoric
  • COM 1102 Writing About Literature
  • COM 2223 Scientific and Technical Communication
  • EAC 2211 Principles of Accounting 1
  • EAC 2212 Principles of Accounting 2
  • EDS 1021 General Physical Science
  • EDS 1022 General Biological Science
  • HUM 1024 Religions of the World 1: Western Religions
  • HUM 2051 Civilization 1: Ancient through Medieval
  • HUM 2052 Civilization 2: Renaissance through Modern
  • HUM 2332 American History: From Reconstruction to the Present
  • MTH 1701 College Algebra

For these specific courses, a separate section for crossover students may be created if necessary to manage enrollment.

Process for Opening New Sections

A new section of any course will not be opened until the existing section(s) have reached three (3) students over the established capacity. This policy is designed to account for potential student attrition. Should attrition be greater then the anticipated, sections may be recombined to use open class seats.

Capacity Review and Approval

Capacity changes for any section must be formally approved by the Florida Tech Online Learning Steering Committee. The Florida Tech Online Learning Steering Committee is also responsible for regularly reviewing and approving the set class capacities for all online and crossover courses.

The Registrar’s Office will act as the liaison for facilitating communication between the academic units and the Online Steering Committee.
