Faculty Ombuds Committee

Purpose and Role

The Faculty Ombuds Committee provides a confidential, neutral, and informal avenue for faculty members to seek resolution of workplace concerns that they feel uncomfortable addressing through the standard administrative hierarchy. These concerns may include interpersonal conflicts, procedural issues, or other grievances, excluding those related to termination.
Appointed by the Chief Academic Officer, the committee consists of three senior faculty members recognized for their integrity, discretion, and commitment to fairness. Their role is to listen, advise, and help navigate sensitive issues in a respectful and constructive manner.

Ombuds Committee Members - AY 2025-2026

Faculty members may contact any of the following committee members to initiate a confidential conversation.

  • Dr. Albert Bleakley, Professor, Department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering
  • Dr. Kenia Nunes, Associate Professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering and Science
  • Ms. Suzanne Kozaitis, Associate Librarian, Evans Library

How the Process Works

Initial Contact: A faculty member may approach any committee member to discuss their concern confidentially.
Assessment and Collaboration: The contacted member will evaluate the issue and, if appropriate, consult with the other committee members to determine the best course of action.
Resolution Strategy: The committee may offer informal mediation, guidance on university policies, or suggest alternative resolution pathways. All actions are guided by the faculty member’s comfort level and the nature of the issue.
Confidentiality: The identity of the faculty member is protected throughout the process. Disclosure of their identity occurs only with their explicit consent and only when necessary for resolution.

Guiding Principles

  • All discussions are expected to be held in strict confidence.
  • The committee does not advocate for any party but works to ensure fair and respectful treatment.
  • Faculty members engage with the committee voluntarily and may withdraw at any time.
  • All interactions are grounded in mutual respect and professional ethics.
