Reference: Groenestein, E., Willemsen, L., van Koningsbruggen, G. M., Ket, H., & Kerkhof, P. (2024). The relationship between fear of missing out, digital technology use, and psychological well-being: A scoping review of conceptual and empirical issues. Plos one, 19(10), e0308643.

Do you experience a Fear of Missing Out every time your phone buzzesIs Missing Out Fear related to mental well-being and the use of digital technology? And “Is this fear stable or temporary? What triggers this fear?

Netherland researchers reviewed 106 articles on this missing out fear and its links to mental health and technology use. These studies measured both positive (e.g., self-esteem) and negative (e.g., depression) measures of well-being. Tech use covered general and problematic use of devices, internet, and social media.

Results? Fear of Missing Out is strongly linked to lower psychological well-being, including more depression and anxiety, and higher use of digital technology, especially social media and smartphones. This fear may connect poor mental health and tech use, but most studies can’t prove which causes the problem. The research on this shows the need for clearer theory and consistent measures.

So, what can help? For those who often feel this fear, try setting time limits, like using social media ½ hour after solid productive work.  Focus on being present. Make real-life connections with family and friends to boost your mood! Stepping away from the screen could be your first step toward feeling less fear.
