#668 - Digital Child
What impact does using social media have on preteens’ growth? Psychologists explored how children’s daily media habits shape their emotional health and friendships. They surveyed 1,400 Florida middle schoolers, ages 11 to 13, about how smartphone use and time spent on social media, gaming, and streaming impacted their well-being and relationships.
Results? Kids who owned smartphones appeared healthier and better adjusted, plus less depressed, socially isolated, and cyberbullied compared to those who didn’t. Most report using digital media, averaging 4.4 hours daily. However, excessive time on social media showed lower life satisfaction and greater irritability when unable to check phones. Lost sleep from late-night use was reduced when phones were kept out of the bedrooms.
Posting publicly on social media led to higher anxiety, depression, and loneliness, especially among the 57% who experienced cyberbullying (called mean names). These youth were prone to losing their temper and feeling that life lacked meaning. Moderate use, particularly for learning or staying connected with friends, was linked to stronger relationships and more positive moods.
Parents! Kids! Nurture growth and creativity using your smartphones to learn, connect, and have fun. But also get outside! Explore the real World! Nature! Sports, Art, Music, Science!
