#653 - Humans Versus AI

Will artists be replaced by AI? With programs like DALL-E generating stunning art images from simple text prompts, some worry that artificial intelligence is replacing artists.
Researchers examined this by comparing AI-generated images based on prompts (or words that would elicit images like “An apple bigger than New York City”) from professional artists, novice artists, and ChatGPT. Then, 300 people rated the creativeness of 45 AI images: 15 images prompted by professional artists, 15 by novice artists, and 15 by ChatGPT.
The results? Professional artists' images received higher ratings than ChatGPT images, and novice artists, were rated the lowest. Prompts in the DALL-E program that combined different or related ideas generated more creative images. This means that professional artists create more unique ideas than ChatGPT.
While these results are encouraging to hear, the researchers note that history has shown that technological advancements sometimes surpass human capabilities. A future where AI outperforms human creativity is not unthinkable. Still, we see human creativity endures, continuing to carve its own path. Let’s remember: the challenge ahead is not whether AI will replace human artists, but how humans will harness AI to expand the boundaries of artistic expression!
