#712 - Training Smarter

Stabile, Mackenzie J.; Prieto, Sarah; Hoots, Jennifer K.; Vargas, Sara; Bellone, John A.; LaFrance, W. Curt, Jr.; Van Patten, Ryan. (2026). Advancing neuropsychology training: Insights and advice from a qualitative analysis in 102 brain-behavior experts. Neuropsychology. Advance online publication. https://doi.org/10.1037/neu0001116

To benefit neuropsychology trainees, neuropsychologists studied how to make training more successful and fulfilling.

U.S. researchers examined advice from 102 brain-behavior experts with a wealth of experience across several countries. They asked expert neuropsychologists one simple question: What is one piece of advice you wish someone told you during training?

The psychologists found four major themes endorsed as being necessary for enabling and enhancing neuropsychologists’ careers, but with broad application to all career trainees and continuing professional growth:

1. mentorship and networking, 2. core knowledge and skills, 3. personal growth, and 4. Decision-making. Thus, encourage trainees to build several supportive mentoring relationships, prioritize strengthening clinical and research skills, seek and stay open to new experiences, and to keep learning throughout their careers.

Experts also emphasized skills that training may overlook, such as communication, confidence, business knowledge, technology, and forensic work. They encourage trainees to follow their interests, take reasonable risks, and to base their decisions on their values.

So, when you or others are in training, remember, your training is more than gaining technical skills. By building relationships, staying curious, welcoming feedback, and remaining open to unexpected opportunities, you can find success while bringing meaning into your career path.
